Ok guys, this is my little brothers computer. Its a P2 233mhz....you know a snail. Thy system was real unstable so i decided i would do a clean install of win98 on it. Well, i threw in my boot disk and it will not boot from the disk. It says to remove disk or media fromt he drive and press any key to restart. I have the boot seq. A,C,SCSI as well. I even took the CMOS battery out and reset the jumper...still no luck. I tested the boot disk on my computer and it works fine. The 3.5 drive is also brand new as of today.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi,

Ok, so if I read what you posted right, you tried to boot up your brother's computer with a windows 98 boot floppy disk, and the computer says remove disk or media fromt he drive and press any key to restart. Then you tried that same disk in your machine and it booted fine.

If thats the case, did you try another bootable floppy in your brother's machine to make sure the floppy drive is working ok? Ive come across cases when a floppy disk will work fine in one machine, and then not work on another machine. So, you can try to make another copy of the boot disk, and try it again, or make sure the floppy drive is working properly on your brother's machine, and try it again.

Try using or making another boot disk. That one doesn't sound like it's working right.

By chance, is the floppy cable hooked up right?

Another thing to try, would be to set the bios to boot from the cdrom and boot from the win98 cd.

The floppy is hooked up right, if i flip the cable around ill get a floppy boot error on startup. I have tried a couple different boot disks, can any of you guys point me to a place to get a good boot disk? Ive tried bootdisk.com.

If i boot from the win 98cd...does it have a format utility like XP? Does it also set the active partition?

If you did flip your floppy drive cable around, then you may have blown out your floppy drive, and thus need a new floppy drive.
If you have like a DOS boot disk, try it out in your brother's machine. If it doesn't work, then just replace the floppy drive from your brother's machine if you have a spare one lying around.

If the drive was blank, and you booted from the cd, I believe it would give you prompts to partition and format it.

Another option for a boot disk is to download the hard drive manufacturers diagnostics/drive prep disk. Some of them will do the partitioning for you.

You could also pull his drive out and prep it on another system.

Well, i just changed my boot seq. to the CDrom first and tried to boot from it. It says its booting from it, then it just goes to windows on my C:.

Some bios's can be a little tricky on how the boot order is set up. Have you tried setting your bios to default settings? Have you made sure it recognizes the floppy drive and the cdrom? If you can get to an "A:" , then format your c drive, reboot and start windows install.
