a buddy of mine is making a scavenger hunt list for some kids (ages 17-20) at a local youth group and wanted to know some things that might be interesting for a scavenger hunt.

don't do a scavenger hunt, do one of those trade things where you give everyone like a roll of toilet paper, and have them arrange themselves in groups of three or four, and then they have to go to peoples houses and ask to trade for something bigger and better.
in LA, people will probably call the cops! no joke!

well, the one that i did before, had two items on there that were embarassing as hell to buy.
trojan MAGNUM condoms and preparation H....lol that was some funny sh!t when i saw the clerks face!!!

I am not embarrassed in the least when buying Magnum condoms. I put them right up front in the cart, you gotta learn to celebrate your victories when you can.

First you want to try and have all the items be free, something you can get for free or really cheap.
Example would be a Burger King french fry bag. Normally you would pay but the cashiers will give them out. I know from experience on this one. Me and a friend were waiting in line and some guy ordered a small fry and when it was taking too long he said just give me the bag. My friend asked me what the hell he did that for and I told her hold on a second and there should be more like him. Not 30 seconds later here comes another guy. He was smarter and just asked if he could have a small fry bag for free. My friend is still puzzled and asks me what is going on. I said scavenger hunt and smiled real big becuase they are so much fun.
As for clues being interesting try and make it relate to the history of the product or the inventor. For example tell them to bring back what you would load into the invention of William J. Brown, Jr. and they would need to bring you some staples. Don't just put on the list bring back staples.
A little bit of work will go into a really good scavenger hunt. I would charge like $10 a person to join in. Keep half of the money for yourself and hive the rest to the person who wins. Give different list to people and give points for different items based on the difficulty of the clue. Give bonus points for getting items off of other players lists. Have everyone meet early on a saturday morning and give them a set amount of time to be back. You get 20 people to participate at $10 a head and the winner would get $100 and you would get $100. The fact that they would be paying to play is the main reason the items should not be stuff you have to buy.
Also go rent the movie Scavenger Hunt. It is from 1979 but it is pretty damn funny.

A while back, hubby and I were in the local bar, when a group of 6 women came in. They were part of a Bachelorlette party on a scavenger hunt. One of the items was a hair from a strange mans chest. Well, I figure my hubby would be classified as strange, so I promptly pulled a few (ok, maybe more than a few) hairs from his chest and gave them to the girls. A couple of beers later, they lost the hairs I'd given them.. sooooooo I got them some more.. *eg*
I was an item on a bachlorette scanvenger hunt. They had to see my man's chest with a pierced nipple. We were in a bar and one of my friends heard these girls asking men if they were pierced. The next thing I know they are all chanting "take it off!" I did and the WHOLE freakin' bar started hooting and hollering. At least I got a few free rounds for the show!

One of the recent innovations in scavenger hunts is to take photographs of things. These are fun, you can be much more flexible and can put together a book of memories at the end, for the honoree or you can split up the pictures amongst the attendees.
Generally, you'd get enough disposable cameras for a couple for each group. They can do such things as take a picture of someone in the group kissing the statue of the soldier in the park, or some of them making a human pyramid on a street corner downtown, etc. At the end, take them all to a one-hour photo place, get some refreshments, and then the pictures are done and hilarity ensues!

that's a good idea....but aren't one hour photo places extremely expensive? i mean cost more to get it donw fast?

The trade game is fun. I organized one for my fraternity and you wouldnt beleive the stuff that showed up at my house. A fuse ball table, a kitchen sink, a cat. wow!
you mean that trade game thing really works??? like i said b4, in LA, they'd call the cops...and maybe the asylum.
