I need some help guys. I've got 4 IDE devices I need to install in a system. How would you recommend setting them up? They are:

30GB IBM 7200 ATA100 hard drive
10GB Maxtor 5400 UDMA33 hard drive
36x cd-rom
Internal Iomega Zip drive

Is it true that if I use the IBM drive as the primary master and the Maxtor drive as the primary slave the IBM drive will only run as fast as the Maxtor? And also, can I hook them on the same IDE cable, or do they require different cables? Whatever I do I do not want the IBM drive to be slowed down by anything. If that means leaving the Maxtor drive out of the system then that's what I'll have to do. (Although I was hoping to use it for back-up and mp3's).

Would it make any difference if I put the cd-rom or the zip on the primary slave? Once again, I'm not even sure if this is possible if they use different cables.

Anyway, any suggestions? Thanks.

Primary = IBM (need ata100 cable)
Secondary = CD and Zip

Maxtor = no where or on separate controller such as a PCI or ISA controller card.

Umm, your motherboard must support ata100 or 66 or the IBM will just be running at 33. What mb do you have?

Where did you get that idea?

IBM as Primary Master and Maxtor as Primary Slave will work fine. That's how I have mine setup (well an IBM and a Fujitsu).
An IBM75GXP has a max STR of 37MB/s so as long as you have an ATA66 or 100 channel the IBM drive won't even notice the maxtor.
If you have only ATA33 you probably want to boot the maxtor becuase the IBm can use all 33MB/s of that channel...
CDRom as secondary master and Zip as sec slave.

Hrmm actually...my hard drives are ATA100 and ATA66 both running in ATA66 mode (my mobo doesn't do 100)...I don't have an ATA33 drive there...the whole channel might be limited to ATA33...sorry I was thinking speed of the physical drive. I'd configure them the way I said and see if the IBM is reported to be at UDMA mode 4 (ATA66) or mode 2 (ATA33).
if you are at mode 4 then you are fine.

Hrmm actually (#2)...I remember reading some benchmarks that compared a Maxtor DiamondMax +40 ATA66 drive to itself once with a CDROM slaved to it and once alone and the difference was negligible. So I'm sure that an ATA100 and ATA33 drives won't interfere with each other.

I have a Microstar K7T Pro2-A. It does support ATA 100 devices. But don't they require a special cable? If so I couldn't connect the Maxtor drive on the same cable as the IBM. Right?
