Need some help running Dual monitors in win 2k

I'm trying to run dual monitors in win2k.
I have the following:
voodoo5 5500 agp
ati xpert XL 8 meg pci

I finally got them to install right.
It turns out I needed to put in the bios that the pci card was the one I was booting from (can someone explain this)
I get it all booted up and everything pretty much works
I have the pci card as the primary adapter and the agp card as secondary.
When I goto play a game, unless I am using glide it tries to use the ati card which sucks, but I can live with. What I can't live with is that glide doesn't work. It just shows thick vertical lines of what it shoudl show acroos and then a vertical black line (ie each section a half inch heigh...think of a farmers field that plants alternating strips)
If I change the voodoo to the primary adapter it works fine and glide runs like it should. Unfortuneately whenever I do this I have about 30 seconds before my system crashes (whether I start a game or just sit around in windows...on reboot I have to rush to flip it back or it locks on start up)

What do I need to do?

I am guessing that it is only working when the Voodoo is the 2nd card because the ATI doesn't work as a 2nd card/dual monitor. Since 3d only works with the primary card, you either have to take out the ATI and not use dual monitor, or just don't play games. =)

Um, 3dfx cards are pretty good, or matrox millenium and up are supported also. I think most of the ATI cards aren't until the Rage 128s. There's a list on microsoft's site somewhere. The Riva128 works also (using it at home), and Trio 64+ also.

the virge's dont work from s3. wont even initialize. I had a problem with a matrox, but i'm trying a permedia 2 card next (its on the list). all ati's under the rage128 aren't on the list, though some people have had luck.

the first virge doesn't work, the + works, cause it's on the Win98 list even, and Win98 is super picky about that. The matrox doesn't even work in Win98, nor do Riva128s. I'll look up the list for ya.

the matrox 1 sorta works. i dont know, i tried it and it worked, but it had this conflict with my radeon that made it crash all the time. also it would hard lock the computer if i tried to use ATI's diagnostic software. i'd stick with pci v3, pci banshee, permedia2's , matrox millenium 2, and g200, and ATI rage128vr / gl pci . rage pros and rage2s aren't on the mighty list, even though they work for some people.


this is a link to the list. this used to be a seperate section of the win2k hardware compatibility list , but they took it out for some reason. anyways its kinda old, but all of these work, as well as some newer ones not on the list
