I just got my 60gxp 40gb IBM hard drive today (drive only). I need to put it inside my Antec SX-1030 case, what do I connect? there are three slots in the back and also where do i position it??? Please reply ASAP, thanks again

put in one of the drive bays (the small "cages&quot😉

there are 2 "slots" on the back of the hard drive...the big one with lots of pins is where you plug in the ide cable. the one with 4 big pins is for the power plug. and the other spot with about 6 small pins (maybe a few more) is where you potition the jumper to set the drive to master/slave/cable select

edit: if you have no idea what i'm talking about you should try to find a friend who has done this before so he/she can show you on the spot

LedZepp steered you in the right direction, but I would like to add that you should make sure that the IDE ribbon cable is inserted correctly (match the colored side of the cable to Pin 1 on the back of the drive. The drive should have a 1 printed close to one end of the IDE slot somewhere on it.

i'm prettu sure pin 1 is the one closest to the power connector. i kind of assumed that all new cables and drives have that "key" cutout so that it can only go in one way. also, your cable probably has a red stripe along one of the sides...that stripe and the red power wire should be next to each other

yea, there is a small 4 pin slot on the back of my case (not the one that connects to the power) but what connects to this? I am only going to have one hard drive so is setting it to master, slave, etc. necessary?? As ledzepp mentioned that this is "where you potition the jumper to set the drive to master/slave/cable select"

first of all, when you used the word "case" in the first sentence, i assume you are referring to the hard drive itself. second, it should be more than 4 smal pins...there should be 8 or 9. ok, there are only 2 spots that things actually "connect" to the drive, those are for the ide cable and power. the other set of pins which i assume you are referring to are for master/slave as i mentioned. nothing plugs into these pins, but there should be jumpers (1 or 2) on those pins. the jumpers should be used regardless of how many drives you have. you mentioned that this will be your only hard drive, but will it actually be the only device on the cable? this is what the jumpers are for. you should set the jumpers for master but it also depends on whether it is the only device on the cable or if there will be a slave on the cable (like a cd-rom drive). take a look here at ibm's quick install guide (in pdf format) and see if it helps

LedZepp, I am sorry, I wasn't thinking about the new cables. They all have that now. I am just so use to having to deal with that stuff in all the older machines I work in. dunn, he is right though. You should have some jumpers on those pins and looking to IBMs website to see how to do it is a great idea.

ok, maybe I am having difficulty with the terminology used here because I am still confused.
This is what I have done so far. I connected the 40 pin connector to the back of the hard drive and connected the other end to the red attachment on the motherboard. Then I connected the connector from the PSU to the back of the hard drive. Now one slot on the back of the hard drive remains. It is the smallest of them all. What do I do from here?

either on the drive or on IBM's website you should be able to see where you must place a "jumper" it covers 2 pins so they're touching. You should set it to master to be safe.
