OK we have a cable connection here at home Road runner. its on the comp on the third floor. I want to hook my comp up also and have it in my room. Anyway a friend of mine gave me a Ethernet hub. Simple enough. Plug cable into it then it split the connection. The thing is my comp doesn?t recognize as being connected to the net. Green light blinks on NIC card and all that but i can?t connect. is there something i am missing in setting this up. I just did a fresh install of win 2k on my comp and i figured it would be good to go. So can someone please LMK what to do. Explicit instructions will be needed because I?m new at the networking stuff

Do you have two IPs from the cable company? If not, you need to set up either a hardware or software router.

no we only have 1 ip. i was tryin to figure a way arround havin to pay for 2. cause it costs extra. and my comp s only gonna be on it for liek a week just enuff time to let me DL all teh windows updates and such things like that. then its off to maine to start workin. i wanted to have my comp all quared away before i left because at best ill have a dial up, up there

You can't just split the connection with a hub and only one IP. You will need to set up either a hardware or software router in order to do this. Or you could just download everything onto the upstairs computer and then transfer it to your computer.

how would i go about setting up a software router??? i dont feel like buyin one but i might just do that seein as im gonna need one next year anyway. info on the softwhere one would be good. and BTW how would i DL windows updates and transfer them to my comp. dont they DL and install at the same time according to what is needed to upgrade

What you could do is install an addition network card into the upstairs computer and use that computer as a DHCP server. You would share the internet connection via the upstairs computer.

umm thats a def possibility i might just do that. juts gotta locate another NIC card and figurte out how thsi is done
im gonna be needn mor of you help so dont go anywhere.

thanks in advance

argh cant find my extra NIC card. must hev done somethin with it. looks like m uying another one tomorrow. have this thing runnin then hopefully. untill then i gotta figure out how to set up the DHCP thingie. is it that hard?

Nope it is really easy. If you have Win98se, w2k or XP you can share the connection. on win98 you have to add the service from the cd or the add remove programs and then you have to tell it what network card is the one connected to the internet and the other will be used to share the connection. However, I would suggest investing on a router instead. It will give you more capabilities and it is simpler to install. Also you do not need to have one computer up and runing all the time for the others to access the internet. You can get them nowadays for less than $100 and most of them have printservers built in to share the printer too.

my 2 cents

yea i was thinkin about a router cause im gonna want one next year when i get my secoond comp. i just cant affor it now anc seein as this conp is always on thats wont be a problim in the imidite future
