Need some help on which receiver to get!

I can get either one of these two for the same price:
Yamaha RXV765 & Denon AVR-1910

I am not up on my home theater info so I am hoping for some insite. I will be running this setup : 46" Samsung 7000 series LED, Samsung BD-P1600 Blu Ray player, Dish Network and Klipsch 5.1 surround speakers (synergy I think, 2 floors, a center channel and rears).

I have always had Pioneer so I have no idea about these two. Any help is greatly appreciated. Oh, I will mostly be watching movies and some moderate listening to music. Thanks all!!!!

I don't have any experience with either unit, but I would go with the Denon. Yamaha's amps have a history of underperforming power-wise, even in their higher end models. Feature-wise, they seem to be the same, aside from the calibration system used, the Yamaha?s lack of analog video up-conversion, & different speaker configurations supported (Denon allows 7.1 + extra front speaker pair or 5.1 + extra front speaker pair + amplified Zone2 ? Yamaha allows several other configurations - see manual). Yamaha uses YPAO calibration, whereas Denon uses a variant of Audyssey. I'm not sure about the current state of YPAO, but I certainly don't recall reading any glowing reviews of it in the past. Audyssey is generally well regarded & employed in several brands that don't use their own calibration system (Denon, Onkyo, etc..), with more complex variants used in higher end units - I've read at least a few endorsements of it here by other members in the recent past. One potential negative of the Denon is the remote - it's double-sided with a door. The front of the remote only controls 6 of Denon's chosen inputs, although there are also 3 macro keys which mitigate this a bit. The rear must be used for all zone2/tuner functions, which may be inconvenient.

This is likely an irrelevant point, but my major pet-peeve with Yamaha is their remotes. They're average in functionality, but often expensive to replace & you will never get another Yamaha receiver remote to control all the functions if it isn't the original model - there is always some function that doesn't work or is missing from another model remote. This is compounded by Yamaha's universally adopted practice of not including setup buttons on the front of the receiver - loose the remote & you can't change a single setup setting w/o it. Pioneer, Onkyo, Denon & others at least maintain some sense of consistency with their controls across the models & years. [/rant]
 
I was looking at receivers a few months ago too. Looked at pretty much all the mid to higher end brands and went with a Denon 2310ci. I didn't listen to any in store so I pretty much bought it blindly by their reputation and specs. I do no regret my decision at all. Night and day compared to the 5.1 JVC it replaced. Also Audyssey makes a huge difference. I've always wondered what the big deal was with all the hype about the surround effects in Master and Commander until I tried it with the new receiver with Audyssey setup. I was blown away at the difference (pun intended).
 
Go with the Denon. I recently got the 1910 and love it. Audyssey is a great auto calibration tool, and dynamic volume really does help to defeat those extra loud commercials.
 
electronics-expo has a great price on many denon recievers...i found a coupon code online and got a 1610 for $275. i believe the 1910 was $415

That's over $100 off their current prices. Is this coupon still around?

I just got an avr-590 from us-appliance for $298 shipped but they raised the price $50 the day after I ordered.

Looks like the code RECEIVERSALE will get you 25% off which is $117 at their current price. Damn, I could have saved $18.

Build quality and input assignment (there is none, not really much of an issue if you have all hdmi components but it's annoying that this feature is gone) have suffered a lot on this years Yamahas. You will like the Denon better. If you can muster the cash for the 2310 Denon its a much stronger unit than the 1910 as the 1x10 denons also are not built quite as well as previous years models, but its not nearly the hit that Yamahas build quality has taken.

Thanks for the input everyone. I did go woth the Denon 1910. I got it for about $350 with the deal I worked out with Ultimate Electronics. I am currently using the Yamaha 765 as a loaner, they were out of the Denon. I should be getting it by this coming weekend. Can't wait to hear it! Thanks!

I like Marantz. But if choosing between Yamaha and Denon I would go with Denon for the simple reason that every Yamaha product I've owned has not had a long life.

So it sounds like you made a good choice.
