I apologize if this is not the right category for this question but think this might be a hardware related problem!

I have a PIII 733 that has had a problem for a few months, but now it has started to get frustrating. It shuts off and restarts on its own anytime..this has now progressed to the point where it starts and restarts at least a couple of times before it finally comes on and then is fine for half an hour or so ( used to be on for a couple of hours or more before) and then shuts off and restarts on its own. I used to use Win 98 and have now for three months had Win 2000 but nothing has changed. I have had it for just over 2 years and it worked fine till a few months ago... any idea what might the problem be?

Thanks for your comments/suggestions/solutions in advance.

List system specs, Pwr supply, motherboard, memory, HDD, video, sound, modem, lan, ect.

Have you upgraded anthing besides OS? Do you get any error messages??

Are you doing anything specific when reboots occur??

Have you updated all your drivers, Win2k service packs, updates ect??

Try testing your memory with this.

Check your voltages, power supply may be going.

Oh and welcome to the forums. May want to try Technical support forums

My first guesses would a faulty power supply or flakey RAM. You can download DOCMEM 4.5a a DOS based memory tester, here.

Hope that helps. 🙂

Maybe the heatsink and/or fans need to be cleaned.

I would start with some summer cleaning. If it still reboots its probably the psu thats failing.
