Need some help from Pentium G4560 owners

I am planning on building a cheap multimedia pc using Intel pentium G4560 on a very tight budget. This build is only going to be used for browsing & video playing. However the videos I am going to play are going to be high bitrate with no hardware acceleration support.I am a bit concerned about this so asking anyone here with a G4560 to do a small test.

This is a test video clip having ~20mbps overall bit rate with 10bit h264 with dual audio & multiple subtitle tracks. Those having G4560,can you please download & play(no streaming in browser as that is not original quality but a lower quality re-encoded version) it to tell me how much cpu it uses.

That is a seriously irritating video clip. It has a small up and down jitter.

Sorry I don't have a G4560, but my computer is 10 years old with a C2Q, which is likely slower for everything than a G4560.

~23% CPU to play in MPC-BE, but there might be some HW support happening with my 10 year old GPU (8800GT).

~60% playing with VLC, which likely doesn't have HW support working.

I would bet the G4560 and it's IGP, has to be better for this than my 10 year old CPU/GPU.

Thanks for the reply. This clip has 10bit h264 video which has no hardware support as it was never adopted commercially & it is used only by anime fansub groups. On my Pentium G620 this clip takes ~80-90% of cpu. It should not take just 23% cpu assuming you are using c2q 6600 but that 60% figure looks possible. Both mpc-be & vlc used downloaded file for playback & not some streaming/browser plugin, right?

What is your budget and planned build specs?
I am aiming to build the cheapest system possible that can playback files like above with ~50% or less cpu usage. Only options I have are G4560 or Ryzen 3 1200 but in my place the B350 mobo with 6 sata ports costs almost twice of a B250 mobo with 6 sata ports so that leaves only G4560.

To be more precise ryzen 3 1200+6 sata ports mobo is costing me ~$65 more than G4560+6 sata ports mobo in my country with prices converted to USD.

Actually since the Ryzen 3 1200 doesn't have an iGPU you will have get a video card as well. The Ryzen 3 2200G isn't available in your country?

I ran it again. Those are the real numbers, with downloaded 732MB clip, standalone applications, running the Video full screen on my HDTV (My PC is my HTPC) or my monitor(both 1920x).

My CPU(old faithful) is a C2Q Q9400 OC'd to 3.2GHz.

I checked GPU Z and the Video engine is showing 0% for both runs, so it appears there is no HW support in either case.

It may just be that MPC-BE has a more efficient decoder, it's my default player. Have you tried current version of MPC-BE on your old Pentium?

B360/G5400 not available?

I think that's the latest cheap intel combo.

i don't know if it will help my my i7-3770K/980ti wsecond screen using the HD4000 (igpu on ivy) w/using pot player:

it does look to use 4 threads and a little of the igpu (~20%).

tossing it on my main screen (980ti) only affected the igpu, it still likes 4 threads.

now in hindsight i could have just disabled the 980ti in the device manager but, a little lazy ATM.

I already have a 1050Ti but for playing 10bit h264 files gfx card support is not available, only cpu processing power required.

B360/G5400 not available?

G5400 cost almost same as Ryzen 3 1200 & same with B360 so no point in getting a dual core when I can get a quad core for just a bit more price(of course I don't have enough to buy either:( ).

I figured it out. The reason is I am using madvr(its a renderer that uses gfx card to enhance picture quality) which adds another 30% to video player's cpu usage. As for the difference in mpc-be & vlc I just remembered that vlc has comparatively poor optimization for 10bit video playback & it has some video post processing filters enabled by default which I think is the reason for such a difference in cpu usage between these players.

If possible could you please download & install madvr to test this same clip with mpc-be.It is just a compressed setup which you extract to a folder & then run install batch file as admin & it will be shown as selectable video renderer in supported players(mpc-be,pot player etc).Once done just run uninstall batch file as admin & it is uninstalled(you can then delete the folder too).If you have a mid-tier gfx card then no need to change any setting but if you have IGP then in madvr settings you need to select the lowest quality settings for the video to be playable.

madVR - high quality video renderer (GPU assisted)

Are you using madvr with potplayer,if yes then just to confirm,is the cpu usage ~21%(pic is not clear enough, some auto compress while uploading I guess). If no then can you please try with madvr(see my above post) if possible as you already have a 980Ti so you will not have to do any madvr settings optimization just to play this clip.

Sorry, but no that is too much like work. That I think MadVR is mostly the placebo effect. It's like the golden ears convinced they can hear all kinds of difference with higher sample rates/bit depth that testing shows they can't.

MadVR is just the same thing for the eyes.

ok, i haven't used mad in a awhile, i use to configure it for my NV card but this time all i did was chhange the renderer:

sorry about the image size before so instead of using separate screens i hooked up the igpu to the same as my 980ti. and used display properties in windows for which gpu.

i also ran with 980ti selected in display properties but just now realized didn't save the screen shot, but i there wasn't anything unexpected, the gpu load on the 980ti was 18% as opposed to the 30% of the igpu. though i should point out the 7% of the cpu load was really a low point at the end of the vid, it mostly stayed around 18% - 23% i had actually captured that but didn't paste it in paint before i used my clipboard again. .

oh. probably no big deal(?) but the igpu clock bounced around 350 to 1150 (see that in the bar graph).

No problem :) the info you provided was useful. Madvr is a subjective issue but for 480p/720p to 1080p conversion I can vouch for its noticeable improvement when configured correctly as per video types.

The images in spoiler are empty for me. As per cpu.userbenchmark.com i7 3770k is ~33% faster than G4560 when using quad cores. My guess is that on g4560 playback with madvr will use ~40% cpu for same clip. Is your 3770k on stock or OC?

i hope you can find all the images here
https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZEBgzBeKd7eVDjtw9

if there is a little better that using google+ photos, that folder should be shared.

my i7 is not OCed. its sitting on a H61 biostar board that's really sparse. for giggles real quick i went and disabled HT and 2 cores but started some freezing. though i did quickly fire up pot player and started watching another vid real quick and saw both cores jump up and stay 48-52%.

right after that things went south for me and i went back to 4c/8t after a few reboots/crashes. checked that same vid again and saw ~12-14%.

Thanks for the extensive testing:) G4560 has 2 cores+HT so it has 4 threads. I am guessing because of its improved architecture its 4 threads(2 core+2 HT) shouldn't be much behind 4 cores of i7 3770k. Btw which OS are you using,it looks like xp but I am guessing win 7 with classic theme software.
