I work as a tutor for the athletic department at MSU, and one of the lines I used to describe it was this:

Promoted good time management and study skills to help develop the athletes into independent learners

I need another word for promoted. I already used it above, and for some reason I can't think of anything else.

I actually, did use a Thesaurus. For some reason I missed encourage. I see it now. Thanks.
 
You turned atheletes into learning creatures!? You deserve a medal for that!! Unless you tutored them on "Underwater Basket Weaving"
