I just put together a computer for the first time tonight. Everything booted up, however I have the following errors:

"Primary IDE channel no 80 conductor cable installed"
AND
"CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck - CPU SOFT MENU"

I put in my windows disk and went to install, but I don't know if I should continue with installing windows or try to fix the errors above. I have a Abit NFS-7 and Athlon XP 2500+ as my system. I am just not sure what I am suppose to be seeing when I boot up for the first time.

Thanks,
Josh

Also in the soft menu I am getting:

CPU Name Is AMD Athlon(tm) XP
CPU Internal Frequency 1100MHz (100x11.00)

CPU Operating Speed 2500+
x - External Clock 166 MHz
x - Multiplier Factor x11.0

This doesn't seem right either, how can I fix this?

I just built a system around the NF7-S motherboard and got that CPU error screen as well while installing windows. There wasn't any alarm beeps from the system so I went ahead and installed windows/drivers and everything seems fine. No other error screens appeared like that cable you got.....Good Luck and check out the Abit.com forums...
And look at this site www.lvcoyote.com for bios info...

I think the cable error is my fault. I needed an extra IDE cable and pulled one out of an OLD computer, guess it wasn't ok to use.

Your probably using a 40 pin cable instead of an 80 pin. Use the 40pin for cd-rom drives. Look at your cables and notice if one has skinnier looking wires because it has more wires in the same amount of space. That'll be the 80 pin cable.

You'll also see this error message if you don't plug the connectors in correctly. Blue to motherboard, Black to Primary and Grey to Secondary.

You need to change that (100x11.00) to (166x11.00). Your CPU Internal Frequency will then display as 1833MHz. Your BIOS is correctly detecting the chip as a 2500+, but your FSB is just set incorrectly. You should consult the manual for how to change this setting.

Ok, fixed the cable issue, I was using a 40 pin cable.

I am still working on getting the "CPU Internal Frequency" set correctly. I looked in the manual and it didn't have a setting to change this. Should I go into user defined and manually set it?

Thanks

Ok, manually set it to 11x166MHz and it is showing the CPU Internal Frequency at 1833. This is what I want, correct?

When I changed this and rebooted it changed my memory from DDR400 to DDR333, is this ok?

Before you do that I'm not real familiar with AMD but have you updated your bios? Doesn't this apply to you?

Version: 13 Released Date: 2003-01-07

1. Please use AWDFLASH 8.23D or later to update NF7 series BIOS. With incorrect AWDFLASH version, the GUID will be erased, and leads to IEEE1394 peer to peer function failed. AWDFLASH 8.23D is included in this BIOS package.
2. Revise the CPU Interface Table for 333FSB CPU.
3. Correct the CPU Temperature misreading issue. With BIOS V1.0, 1.1,and V1.2, the CPU temperature reported in BIOS is too hight. V1.3 BIOS fixes it and report correct CPU temperature; meanwhile, the Hardware Monitoring tool needs to be updated to "HWM_NF7V13.EXE" together with BIOS update.
4. Change default year to 2003.
5. Update SiliconImage Sil3112A BIOS to v4.2.00.
6. Add new function- Shutdown when CPU FAN fail.
7. Revise function- "CPU shutdown temperature" and "CPU Warning Temperature".
8. Fix Windows XP fail to shutdown when "USB support" is set to "By BIOS".
9. Support AMD 333 FSB Barton CPU.
10. BIOS Compile Date: 01/07/2003.

I know it is an old revision but I thought I would check. Otherwise set it manually.

haha, yeh I know, after I started building and reading of problems, almost every solution was flash the bios. I think I am going to order one from newegg, but I couldn't wait any longer to get started.

Sounds OK depending on what you are using for cooling.

It has been running well for the last day or so. I just loaded up Prime95 and ran the "Torture Test", my temps are as follows under 100% load and surfing the web:

50C - CASE
31C - CPU

Still Ok?

Also been running prime95 for the past 3 hours with no errors. I will let it run overnight and make sure it is stable though.

Thanks Josh
