I downloaded some free ones, but they suck when it loops; there's like a 2 second delay. I like the sound of rain ones.

I am so confused.

Rain white noise?

EDIT: I used this one during college to help me sleep in my dorm. I lived in a crazy party dorm which made it impossible to sleep Thu-Sun.

doesn't audacity have an option to produce white noise? Check it out, OP. Audacity is free and a small download. You should have it on your pc anyway. It's a great, free, multi-track audio editor.

EDIT: I forgot that I had Audacity installed on this laptop. On the main menu, select Generate -> White Noise. On the pop up box type in the duration in seconds. Easy, Breezy, Beautiful Cover Girl.

Apparently there is some other definition to white noise other than just equal energies across all frequencies.

EDIT: looked it up in Wiki, apparently there is something called a "white noise generator" which produces random noises, or else nature sounds (like rain) because apparently that help people sleep. However as an engineer I find this name silly since such things are clearly NOT white noise, white noise sounds annoying as hell.

Apparently "white noise" generators actually generate pink noise, make sense ya? Probably the people marketing it think guys would think a "pink noise generator" made them sound gay or something :p.

How about brown noise?

I've recorded the ocean going by before. It's quite relaxing. :)

Download Goldwave
Create a new file.
Tools -> Expression Evaluator
Noise -> White/Brown/Brown(softer)

Then go to Effect -> Pitch to change the frequency, or else one of the other options there to change the length of the file. If you want, you could make it sound like a rocket taking off.:D

Correct. Commercial products that are sold as white noise generators output pink noise as well as sounds of nature.

In the audio world, a white noise generator produces...well, white noise. There is also pink noise, red noise and grey noise.

White noise sounds like the static you get when your T.V. is no a channel that's not receiving a signal.
