Need some DOS help? to reinstall Win 95 prior version free.

I wiped my Win 95 computer and can't use the reinstall disk because of hardware changes. I also have an upgrade version of Win 95, but it won't go on either cause it can't now see the prior version. I can install Windows 95 upgrade without a qualifying product, by doing the following, if I understood what it meant:

Create the following file on your hard disk:
WIN386.EXE and the Upgrade version will then install.

The easiest way to create this file is to type the following at the command prompt:
ECHO [some random characters] > WIN386.EXE

I have tried doing this is all sorts of ways but just get bad file command.

At what prompt do I start A or C I assumed C.

At the C prompt I have:

C:\>

What do I type? For example I tried:

after C:\> I typed ECCO [jkjkjkjkjk] > WIN386.EXE

Bad file command

I tried without parenthesis, without the > character etc. All I get is bad file command.

Use edit or whatever to open up the file, and type some garbage then save it. Same thing. I thought it looked for the win.com file though?

You could just copy the files from another computer too, or stick your drive into another system as c: or even d:, and install windows (make sure to specify the right install directory). I just use Win98 though...

You could email me if you want too, I have win95b full, and win95 upgrade (that doesn't seem to check for previous versions).

Zack, I don't get the lingo is the problem. I can type the garbage ok, but I don't know what you mean by use edit or whatever to open up the file.

The WIN386.EXE is right though, I'm pretty sure.

type this:

copy con win386.exe

then type some random characters, and then type Ctrl+z... you now have your win386.exe file....

BTW... it's echo not ecco. I know it's probably a type, but just making sure

When the upgrade is looking for prior version
can't you browse to a win95 or like dir. on your
reinstall disk?
