I'm redesigning an introduction page to my site so that anyone who visits it can see it just fine. Here's a prototype:

http://students.washington.edu/robcole/introtemp.htm

This really isn't quite what I'm after, but it's the closest I've been able to come up with.

It's for the site www.hikefordiabetes.org, to replace the current JavaScript resolution detector, that I think may be crashing some older browsers (and preventing us from being listed on www.diabetes.org).

Can anyone offer some advice/suggestions/lend a helping hand?

thanks,
Rob

do you have any more graphics? or do you just want to use the one you have there?
if you do have any more stock gfx (pics of outdoors, the trail, etc.) email some: kabes@sympatico.ca

kami,

That's the only graphic I have right now that I think would be worth it, until I get a pic of the three of us up there (which we don't have any of yet).

I'll email a handful to you and you can choose.

Killbat,

I can't seem to duplicate your problem. Kami seemed to get it to work fine.

oh - maybe I got it. Killbat, you're not supposed to click any of them yet. It's just a design question I have.

Oh yeah - I want to KISS, so people don't complain about the opening being too confusing for them.

as a rule of thumb, try not designing pages that require more than 800x600 res. There's still a lot of 15" monitors, or 17"s being used by older people who can't read small text.

for weight, try to keep it under 60kb a page.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing. I'm making the Intro page compatible w/800x600, and then giving users the choice to go beyond 800x600.

Don't take this the wrong way but: Huma has a good point.

However, I will expand on this thought. The type of site you are designing for does not have the type of content that should require multiple formats. It is not as though you are designing a site for a video game, it is a diabetes hike. You should also take into consideration that many poeple who would visit this type of site may not even be aware of thier resolution (once again, a gamer is an example of someone who would)

That is just my opinion, I look at design much like I look a sales, you can't give people to many options, otherwise they may get discouraged and "click the back button"

Thanks. I'll see what I can do, in terms of design, to make it look good both ways (@800x600) so no choice is required.

I always try to design with the lowest common denominator in mind... 640x480. There are a lot of people out there that still use that god awful resolution for everything (specially if they have a 15" monitor), however the overall majority of people use 800x600, so you wont be going wrong desiging for it.

A good width to keep in mind is 610; thats the amount of pixels that you can have for the page to fit in 640x480. It looks like you shouldn't have any problems hitting that, so you won't really need an intro page.
