Need some backup power info

I have never used those backup power systems and don't know much about em, but I need some kind of backup battery for when i get a blackout so the computer can shut down normally and i wont lose any data... this is what those UPS's are for right? They also act as surge protectors? So if i get the Opti-UPS unit i can just plug into walljack and then plug my computer into it and that's it? If there is a blackout can they signal the machine to save whatever its doing and shut down ? Thx for any info
