Come on, thought you were supposed to be good at math. No papers. 🙂

Aye aye! I am taking AP calculus, I am good. But it's summer, and I don't use my brain. I thought I already explained this? 😀

Does this kind of basic math even require the use of one's brain?

No.

Ok i am trying to work out some problems, and I need some help. Frankly i suck at math..i see it and then i go completely blank.

A few pre-requisites:

A. YES, I would like answers to these questions.
B. NO i do not just want the answers..i would like some step by step help if anyone is up to it, I am trying to understand what I am doing.

So here are the problems:

1. Which of the numbers -2, -sqrt(2), -(1/3), 0, 0.8, sqrt(3), ?(Pi) are rational numbers?
2. Evaluate (show work!). ((-2)^2 - 6)/(7 - 9)
3. Evaluate (show work!). |-4| + 4 * (6 - 8)
4. Evaluate (show work!). 6 / (-2)
5. Evaluate (show work!). 6 / (-1/2)
6. Identify the property that justifies the following equation. 4 + (3 + x) = (4 + 3) + x
7. Simplify the follow expression (show work!). 3 * y + 9
8. Simplify the follow expression (show work!). 2 * x * (3 * x - 2) - (2 * x^2 + 4)
9. Evaluate the follow expression with a = -2, b = 3, and c = 4
2a ? 4b + 2c^2
10. Determine if the following equation is true if x = 4. 2 *(2 * x - 3) = 10

eep, removed the answers.

thats a decimal and a fraction, not just a fraction, or specifically a ratio of two numbers

pi itself is not a rational number, too.

i believe the specific definition for a rational number is one that can be written as a fraction (as in no decimals). Thus some repeating decimals count, like 1/3 and 2/3. Pi is just a real number

So for all you thread crapping people..bite me.

I wasnt looking for answers, I was looking for the work to get the answers. I didnt logoff, i am still here and have been here.
next time read a bit more, i dont need your sh!t because you think the math is remedial or not...I asked for help...and at least someone here was willing to help and I commend them for that.

if you dont want to help me work out this stuff then dont post a reply..

Christ...when it comes to computer systems, I forget more than most people know everyday...but when they asl for help I dont tell them to stop being a retard and do the work, I try and H-E-L-P! Look into it...its quite a concept.

Why dont you stop thread crapping...I am working on the problems now...and dont call me young man..it isnt like you know that you are my elder.

Ok so problem two here is what I did and what I got:

((-2)^2 - 6)/(7 - 9)

-2*2= -4 - 6 = -10 / ( 7-9=-2) = -12 ? ?
I think i am missing something?

that's not right
(-2) ^ 2 = (-2)*(-2) = 4

Wow, what's your problem? I was joking.

(-2)^2=4

Therefore:

x=(4-6)/(7-9)
x=-2/-2
x=1

Don't get so stressed guy. It's not good for you.

I am stressed more so because I dont understand than at anyone inparticular...as was said..it is easy but I swear I just dont get it....
It is irritating to me that I am having such a hard time with what is obviously easy for so many people... 🙁

Ok i jumped to #10 and got this:

10. Determine if the following equation is true if x = 4. 2 *(2 * x - 3) = 10
True
2x4-3=5x2=10 <--this yields my answer of 10

There you go.

Wohoo! got one right...but the #2 is still wierd to me....
even if i use a calculator i get a different answer...mind playing that one out for me fully?

you aren't using the calculator correctly then (eg forgetting a parenthesis)

Evaluate (show work!). ((-2)^2 - 6)/(7 - 9)
first you evaluate (-2)^2, that's equivalent to (-2) * (-2) which is 4
(4-6)/(7-9) = (-2)/(-2)
= 2/2 = 1

holy sh!t, do you really live in Auburn? We live pretty close!

...Well, I guess this says a lot about the school systems in Maine. 😛 precisely why I'm consdiering graduating as a Junior.
