i have a friend who joined the peace corps and went to morocco. she loved it.

i have another friend who went to London and just got a job as a bartender then went backpacking around europe. he loved it.

i have another friend who went to thailand to volunteer helping out elderly people displaced by the tsunami and by their families. she loved it.

Mexico or some South American places come to mind. My aunt went to Mexico for a business thing and she came back pretty shaken. Southeast Asia also comes to mind.

i'm not sure about the peace corps but i think they handle your costs.

the volunteering thing in thailand i think my friend had to pay for the flight and any non-volunteer-work travel.

my buddy who went to london just paid for the round-trip ticket then made his own travel money bartending.
