Hey there,

I recently upgraded to Athlon 64 3000+ / ASUS K8N-E Deluxe (socket 754). System runs great so far.
A month later I went to an AMD tradeshow and won a brand-new MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (socket 939) in a raffle.

The dillema: Is it worth buying a newer Athlon 64 3000+ (socket 939), using the new mobo and selling the older combo? Or should I just sell the unopened MSI board and get some better RAM instead?

Thanks for advice.
 
Tough call. I think I'd probably sell the stuff off and move to the newer board. It leaves you more future proof and once 939 starts really taking over, it'll start to get hard to get rid of that 754. (well, a little harder at least).

On the other hand...thats a pain in the ass and you can make some free money in the mean time selling that new board.
 
The 3000+ 90nm overclocks well. The 90nm chips are also known to run cooler and consume less power than their 130nm counterparts. The 90nm chips are capable of running in dual channel mode, giving them a very small performance increase in select cases.

My opinion: If you don't overclock then stick with socket 754. You won't notice a performance increase by switching to socket 939 and the power consumption and cool running of the 90nm won't get you much of a performance difference. I'd upgrade the RAM or video card instead.
 
Keep the Neo2. 754 is quickly being established as budget. THe future is 939, just sell the 754 board, or sell em both and get an Nforce 4 board (when they come out) and use the left over money for a second Video Card or something.

Well, I'm running a 6800GT 256Mb, so no need for a new video card yet.

How much do you guys think a used ASUS K8N-E Deluxe / A64 3000+ combo would go for right now?
 
The CPU by itself goes for about 100 - 150 bucks on ebay. I only found one of that motherboard on Ebay, it's running at 130 with 2 days left but no bids yet (probably all gonna bid last few hours), so I bet it would run for about that much.
Don't know about combos though.

For a CPU upgrade, you definately want a 90nm one. 3000+ is 160 bucks, 3200+ is about 190, and the 3500+ is about 290.
