Need Some advice: The biggest lie I might tell

Hi Guys.

Okay, let me e make a not very long story even shorter. I have Bi-Polar disorder, and have been severely depressed for over two years now. Of course, I made the horribly dumb ass Idea to leave my Network Admin job before I had a new job lined up. Just that with my depression at that time, everything just looked so bleak as it was. I thought I just needed a break, to feel better and I'd quickly find a job.

Well that didn't quite happen. So here I am, 2+ years later, STILL unemployed. But I can't go on like this. I will be looking for work this week. I know this Q will come up sooner than I'd like. "And why haven't you been working for the last 30 months? Where were you?"

Telling a HR person I was suffering from sever depression, is...uhhhh probably NOT the best thing to do when I'm out looking for a new job. So, I'm wondering whats the best white>Grey Lie I can come up with......?? I still have a good deal of my NT/W2k Server admin skills. I"m a 25 year old male, who can type like a mofo. But its been a while of course...and a 30 month gap on my resume will surly earn it the trash bin.

Can anyone help me out? Can ya think of a good 'reason' why someone wouldn't work for such a long time. And should I never tell any prospective HR person I was suffering from a severe depression. Damn man, this ain't gonna be as easy looking for a J O B as it could. But I know that, and that doesn't really discourage me.

Thanks guys.

Family illness?

Yea, tell 'em you had to take care of your sick mother who was slowly dying of cancer.

Family Illness, man I really had already thought of that one...but I actually live with the mother right now...so if anyone calls for me from work, might not be the best lie to try out...

How bout my 'long lost sister' from Florida....

(I know, I know the story just gets better and better.....)

YOU DA MAN!!

Thanks, that makes it sound like I"m not a total lazy ass, and have been trying to keep my skills up while waiting for the doctors to find a suitable bone marrow donor for my 'sister.'

Thanks

you took time off to travel?

Well that might be good one to use too...

I was actually thinking the same idea. Say that my grandmother died 2 years ago, and I the money she left me in her will gave me such a great opportunity to travel the world. 'I couldn't just pass that chance up...'

If I do use this excuse, should I put it somewhere on my resume...or wait till the Interview...?? I mean, I know I'm desperate and should look around for a while..but I think my best bet right now are to try and find PC/IT help at local non-profit agencies & at the same time try out temp work even if its just simple 'office work.' Like I said, I need a job now BAD!!!

Thanks guys.

I like this. Follow up with...

*leaning closely to interviewer*

*whispers into ear*

I could tell you, but I'd have to....

and just nod your head and sit back.

$75k salary with private car, will do!

Just say you took some time off. Lots of people graduate (2 years ago puts you around 22-23, right?) and just do whatever. No need to make up storieds about relatives, etc.

Just tell them you hooked up with a sugar momma, and she was supporting you until 2 years later when you finally were about to round third base and you found out the sugar momma was actually sugar daddy.

I wish I was 22-23...I"m 28. Which in the IT field is probably Geezer status...

hahaha..I know John Cusack said that but what movie? I'm drawing a blank.

Why not just be upfront and say you had the means to take off from working for awhile so you did.
