So the other day I happened upon a dual socket 603 board for only 40 bucks. I am now looking around at some Xeons. I don't really need anything overkill and saw I could pick up a matched pair of 1.7s for $60+shipping. Those are used.

Looked around a bit more and found this store, which has the 2.0 Xeon for $58ea+ shipping.

Is it worth the extra $56 to get the 2.0s?

From what I have read the 2.0 had a new core (Prestonia) based on .13 vs .18, 512k L2 vs 256, and has hyper-threading whereas the 1.7 does not.

Basically, I don't really need a dual-processor system. This thing is just gonna be a file server for all my mp3s. I've never had a MP system before and for the price the mobo was at thought it would make an interesting project.

Yeah, I'd go with the used 1.7s. The whole idea is to get something cheap, right? So, go with that theme all the way.

if you'll never do moer than serve mp3s...why do you need dual 1.7s? Just setup an old 200mhz machine and you should be good to go. The only limiation to that Iw ould see is if the mobo won't take hdds over a certain size.

But if you go dual core anyways, then I would consider whether or not you will ever do anything MORE. If you do, it maybe a better investment to go with the dual 2.0s.

But again if you are going to just fileserve you are doing overkillx1000000000

You of course realize that if you buy the 2.0GHz Xeons with HT enabled, you are required by law to install BOINC on the machine so it can crunch distributed computing workunits while it is idle? And you have to join Team Anandtech. It's the law, I tell you. :)

Well the idea was never to go the cheapest route all around. the idea was never to set up this system at all. i was just looking around on ebay for scsi hard drives. while i was at it i wanted to search for a new controller as I am still using my old Diamond Fireport 40. when I searched for scsi the motherboard came up so I thought what the hell. I haven't had an Intel based system since my Celeron 300A. So I got the motherboard and some scsi drives.

There is always the possibility of doing more with it. Just for right now the only thing I can say for sure that it will do is host my mp3s. i was thinking i wanted to set raid up though as I often get paranoid about everything sitting on just one hard drive. my collection dates back to 1/23/99 which was when a hdd crash wiped my old collection.

Googer thanks for the links. I am going to have to watch those 2.2s. If they stay where they are at I will get them.
