Im buying this from a member on another forum, for $110 shipped. (thats a good deal right?)

Im going to be grabbing 4x1gb of the HP memory

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2136420&enterthread=y

Waiting to pickup a second hand g0 q6600 (when the new cores come out)

going to be using this from my current build.
XFX 7900GT
WD 160GB IDE DRIVE
Aspire 600W PSU.
Windows XP X64 PRO
(4gb will be recognized right?!)

every thing look good? any compatibility issues i missed?

if im correct, this will be quite an upgrade from an X2 939 Setup right?

As long as the 7900 is PCIE and not an AGP model then you have no compatability problems.

The HP is slow and is $20 per GB if I read correctly? Instead why not consider the A-Data 2GB (2x1GB kit) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $27.99 after MIR.
This would total $56.98 for 4GB as opposed to $80 for the HP and the memory is quicker.

If you were to overclock the Q6600 gently to 400x7 or 400x8 then you could have the memory on a 1:1 ratio which would give a good performance on the Abit. The Abit board is nice btw.

Altogether I think you have a nice upgrade going for very little expense. The 7900 will bottleneck though on some games and applications.

That HP memory is good to OC the Q6600 from 2.4GHz stock (266Mhz x 9) to 3GHz (333MHz x 9) without any problems. I'm using those same HP memory in my system and was able to OC the memory to 720Mhz at stock voltage (1.8V). I haven't tried to OC it further. $3 for a 1GB stick is a steal. HP is losing money in selling that memory!!!

Is it $3 a stick? Am I reading it wrong? I though it came to $20 a stick. Please confirm as at that price I could get a few for another rig.

what would i need to do in order to get this cpu to at least 3.2? will the stock cooler be sufficient?

also, i just ran out of AS5, do you guys recommend it over standard thermal paste? i really didn't notice a difference between the two times i applied the paste to my cpu, but that might just be me...]

cozumeal, that hp memory will be $12.00 for 4gb's, tell me where it gets cheaper then that :D

if i need an after market cooler, what do you guys recommend?

is there a better motherboard for ~$110ish?

$2.99 a stick (after $20 rebate for each stick, up to 5 sticks) and FREE SHIPPING. I bought 4 sticks and got my rebate from HP within 4 weeks.

1) 3200 = 356x9 or 400x8 Use CoreTemp 0.95.4.0 as it will monitor your temps on all 4 cores. Make sure everything stays below 65c on full load (intel spec is 71c for G0 stepping) and if you find it is getting too hot then you can get a Thermalright 120E or Tuniq Tower or whatever.

2) AS5 has been improved on. Artic MX-2 has better thermal qualities as does the Tuniq TX-2.

3) There are better motherboards to be had but I don't think you would get better for the price.

To get the Q6600 to 3.2GHz, you will need to increase the mobo base FSB to 356MHz, which equivalent to a 712Mhz for the memory (356MHz x 2). I think the HP memory can handle this frequency (mine is running at 720MHz). OCing is a crap shoot. Most CPU will hit 3GHz without any problems, some will have a hard time hitting 3GHz and some will go above 3GHz, if you're lucky. IMHO, there will be little difference in performance between 3GHz and 3.2GHz but there would be more power consumption and heat generated.

I suggest you OC with stock cooler first to see if you're CPU limited then determine if an aftermarket cooler is warranted.

Sick rig you got there Louis, Hopefully I'll be able to get my quad to 3.2

What where you able to get yours too with the stock hsf?

I'm assuming your quad is the g0 stepping correct?
