Folks, I'm trying to get an idea of what's available for decent prices. Here's the situation - I just built a rig for a friend of mine and he's concerned about the mid 40C temps that his Duron 900 (default speed and voltage) runs at. He's afraid that it may go above 50C. Needless to say I told him he had nothing to worry about unless he started overclocking or the fan on his current HSF (OCZ Monster w/copper insert base and Arctic Silver) fails. What would you guys recommend if he wants to step up to a more efficient HSF? He specified a $40.00 spending limit. Any and all comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks folks. ;)

well, 45C isnt' a horrible temperature.... REmember that your friend can't compare temps with different MB's.

And how's his case cooling? If he's got no case cooling or high case temps, then getting a newer heatsink really wont' help his temps that much.

I'd suggest workign on that rather than a newer heatsink.

Mike,
I tried telling him that 45C isn't bad at all but he's a bit paranoid since he just got the rig this past Friday. It's a mini-mid tower with one 80mm case fan up front. When I first put it together I ran SiSoft Sandra's Burn-In Wizard for 50 cycles straight and temp only got to 48C. If anything I might just put his system into a little larger case. Right now with the current case the P/S hangs down in front of the top half of the MoBo so there's very little room for a decent sized exhaust fan in the upper rear of the case. There is a spot where I could put a 50mm fan right between the P/S and the video card. However, on the larger case that I'll probably end up using, there's a spot for an 80mm fan designed into the back and room to cut out an opening for a 60mm above that. If it comes down to it I guess he's going to have to weigh his concerns about fan noise against his paranoia about high temps.:Q

I am currently running a Athlon 1.2 and the thing was running at 71C when I first got it! While I did get some results by upgrading the HSF(went up to a Volcano 5)... My best move was to move up to an Antec case from a standard Enlight Mid. The model number escapes me at the momemt, but it has a 350W PS and plenty of cooling (like 4 or 5 fans in it:D).

Jfrag, I'd have to agree with you and Mikewarrior2. I'd probably find more improvement by working on the case or going to a different case altogether. Thanks guys!;)
