Need some advice: Best way to get some Stamina?

ndee

Lifer
OK, the last year was a cigarretts & alcohol year, so right now, I have zero stamina 😉 I wanted to ask, what's the best way to build some stamina back up again. Going jogging would help? What else?

Thanks in advance

More sex (preferably with someone).. 😛

Eat a well-balanced diet, get a decent amount of excercise, don't smoke, cut down on the alcohol intake, and take a multivitamin. Or inject speed on a regular basis. Your choice...

WHAT kind of excercise? And now, I can't eat a well-balanced diet, cuz I hate vegetables. Nah, I don't smoke anymore. You mean these multi-vitamin "pills"?

For stamina, bicycling. Since it's low impact that makes it a lot easier to get started in for out of shape and/or weak-willed individuals.

Cool. I'm goin' right now... cuz next week, I have a basketball tournament, so I have to be in shape 😉

Next week?!? ROFL Way to plan ahead. 😀😉

Basketball, eh? Well although it's great for stamina bicycling does work different muscles than basketball. Try finding a tall building and running up and down long flights of stairs repeatedly. That way you can give the right muscles a slight boost as well. Just be careful not to overdo it b/c this will really get your heart pumping like crazy.

When you're jogging, go half-speed most of the time, then every so often, pick up your speed to full speed.

Then slow back down to half...repeat for four hours

Wua, just came back from a 20km/12.5miles bicycle ride..... I'm done for today 😉

so.... running stairs will help? Gonna check this out tomorrow or tonight....

<< 12.5 miles? that's it? c'mon, go for more 😛 of course.. it is extremely time consuming.... heh >>

It is..... and... you forgot, after 2 layups, I'm nearly dead 😉

Remember that the distance you ride and the time spent in the saddle are not the deciding factors in how much your stamina improves. It's all about quality over quantity--start out slow to warm up but then you want to get your heart rate up and keep it there. As long as you keep your heart pumping at elevated levels (>70% of max) you will be improving your fitness, guaranteed.

ooooops, made it kinda wrong I guess..... at the beginning full power.... and then... the last 1 or 2 miles.... I was goin' slow.....

Also, be sure to stretch before and after exercise to prevent stiffening, minimize your risk of injury, and enhance flexibility as well. It's a PITA but well worth it if you plan on doing this more than one week. I find that the pre-ride stretch improves performance as well.

OK, cool, thx for the advice. Do you think, if I make from now on, everyday a 20km ride on my bike, I will be a little bit more fit on next Saturday?

Probably not...a lot of getting stronger is recovery

Start biking. 20-30 mins a day on a bike never killed anybody, but you'd be surprised how much a difference it'll make after a couple weeks. Plus it really isn't "stressful" on your body like jogging can be, and can be a useful exercise too. (ie you can bike to blockbuster and return your movies, or whatever)

Last summer I biked 5-6 miles a day (no big deal) and that kept me in pretty good shape.

Crap, should have started a little bit earlier. Oh well.... it will help a little bit I guess....

Maybe I can bike to work everyday.... hhmmmm

Some excerise to get your heart, body, and lungs in better shape. Also make sure you start eating a balanced meals, with some veggies and fresh fruits. Also a good idea to take a multivitiamine.

Nah, vegetables are a no-no for me. I'm 19 and never ever ate vegetables before. I had some stamina when I played basketball 3 years ago so I think this stamina could come back 😉

B0mberman is right, you will likely hurt your fitness (and potentially injure yourself) if you overdo it. Have at least two rest days between now and then, although if you feel up to it a short casual ride is okay on those days. Personally I like to squeeze in a short (<1 hr.) ride on my off-days, just to stay in rhythm.

Be sure to vary your excercise regimen for best results. Don't just ride the same route every time. Ride different distances at different paces each time. Break up long, monotonous rides by climbing out of the saddle and sprinting a short distance. You can also do intervals along the lines of what Bman suggested, alternating high and medium intensities over the length of the ride.

Hehe...you're probably right but don't get in the habit of doing that forever (alternating one year good fitness, one year bad). I used to do the same sort of thing--slack off every winter and then let it slide off naturally every spring. Well, guess what? I got complacent and one spring the pounds never came off and I had to bust my ass from then on. LOL, aging is a b*tch.

hahaha.. reminds me of when i went nuts to get ready for volleyball season (college).. we had a 9 story parking deck... i went up those stairs 20 times one night...without stopping.. the only break i had was running down... i got real good at stairs 😀
