I'm currently a manager at a kiosk doing retail sales of cellular phones. I have a high school diploma and that's it. I'm currently going to a community college with roughly a year behind my back. I'm majoring in liberal arts and hopefully plan to make it up to the Uni level and major in one major that I can't decide yet. I'm thinking about business, psychology, and computer science as my first love.

Now my company isn't the stablest around. Right now we are heading into a downturn for the worst. Meaning that maybe within the next few months we may be aquired either by another company and given a huge pay cut and or just close down shop.

I am worried. I don't know what to do as I don't have many "contacts" besides the people I currently work with. Out of the three other managers that I work with, one has a degree for some easy ass major from a University. Anyhow that is besides the point. The other two of the managers have no degree and or school experience except for highschool + this and a few years of other wireless retail employment.

I could go and look for employment at another wireless sales company around here but it's a given that my pay won't be as much as I am making now, which is $30k/yearly salary.

I want at least $10.00 an hour if I need to find another job. I would rather stay away from retail as retail is not the best thing for me.

What can ANY of you recommend that might help me out? I wouldn't mind working for the state of government. But I know to get your foot in the door it takes time and possibly starting out with a really low pay.

I'm very sorry if I annoy you all with my posts but this is a very serious post. I really need to know what other options there are out there. I would prefer not to go back into retail sales. Possibly a desk job doing clerical work would suffice for now.

I am pampered at my current job. I work inside of K-Mart by myself in my kiosk. I have a computer with DSL access to freely surf the net. Out of the day I do roughly one hour of work total. The rest of the day is either posting here at Anandtech or just sitting around and waiting for customers.

It's a GIVEN that the company is gonna close down and or be aquired by someone else.

What should I do? I know staying in school is the best answer. But what about my financial situation? I'm far from getting a degree, about a year or two away. I was planning on changing my major to auto mechanics which is a two year program. I could go back and do that but that wouldn't start until this coming January.

HELP. Please give me whatever advice you can give. I prefer positive advice and not advice like "Kill yourself."

Also, if RossMan or anyone else reads this please just stay out of my thread as I know you dislike me for making numerous threads on this forum. Thanks for reading.

CLIFF NOTES

I might lose my job in the near distant future. I have a high school degree. I don't know what to do. I'm confused, lost, and depressed.

I just need sound advice. Thank you very much ahead of time.

based on your cliffnotes and a bit of skimming..

why don't you sign up for a local community college? or maybe try something like devry, iTT tech- that sort of thing. That would raise your ability to make money by a lot. I'm sure you could find another wireless job to support yourself since you've been working already- those classes are at most maybe 50-60 dollars? Your best bet would be to continue education.

edit- never mind, read the first paragraph

Yeah I'm still in school going to a community college. I know for a fact that staying in school is the best choice I can stay with.

That's one of the downfall's of working in business and only having a high school education. It's risky. It's never too late to take courses though. If you want a job take anything in the math/stats area.

I forgot to mention I'm 21 years old. And I'm still currently enrolled at a community college. But it won't be for another few years until I have a BA degree.

I know of a job that only takes 2 years at a community college (associate degree). Nuclear medical technology. Basically, you operate MRI machines in a hospital. This job is in high demand, and the pay ranged from 40k-75k.

Just did a quick google search, this man is not exagerrating. Average, with 1 years of experience seems around 45K! That is more then a Computer Science job will pay (these days, at least). I glanced at the courses, they look kind of hard though. This just might be one of the best choices you may have.

I am a Computer Science major, and seriously, I don't see a future in this field anymore. Doesn't look like that jobs are going to be coming back. Sure, an increase in jobs will be noticed once the economy picks up (????), but I am sure they will be swarmed with applicants.

I don't know about majoring in psychology. Don't see too many opportunities with that. But this is just my opinion, I could be wrong. Business is a good choice, but a very good GPA seems like the requirement to get into the job market. For CS, 3.0+ is considered good. For business 3.5+ is considered good. Don't for a second think "Hahah!! Business classes, I will ace those mofos in no time". It can get very challenging at times.

The thing is, the MRI job doesn't ammuse me. I don't think I could be happy doing that for the rest of my life. I would go into work and just not even have good morale due to not wanting to be there.

But think of the hot nurses surrounding you! Do you think it's just a conincidence that so many porns are about patient, doctor and nurse? It's not! According to a survey done by Jupiter Data International, Hospital workers get laid an average 46% more at work. Think of this!!!!!!!!!!

Ok sorry. You know about this job already, or just heard about it? Doesn't hurt to learn more and see how it really is.

I wouldn't major in psychology if paying the bills is a concern. I graduated with a degree in it. When I went to college I had the mindset of "learning for the sake of learning" and took a variety of classes. I won't say it wasn't beneficial - it was in an intangible sense, but unless you have a plum job lined up for you after college, you'll need something more marketable like business or computer science. Minoring in psychology would be a good idea.

Ok that never crossed my mind. But I would need to be off my anti-depressant for at least a year before I would be eligible for the military. The second comes to mind, a lot.

Thanks Tommy for "backing" me up on the NMT thing. I realize that working with MRIs may not be your thing, but many people working retail would rather have a job that paid 45k starting and work in a clean, air conditioned environment doing something not to strenuous. And hey..technology..come on...expensive big machines! WOOO! :D
