Preferably some funny stuff to watch while we pig out on potluck.

Used to watch The Office Christmas episode but can't do that anymore.

Current plan is to put on the Modern Family Christmas episode.

Any other suggestions?

Is it? I'm sure the media companies would love to say so, but it's a private performance. That's like saying you're breaking copyright by letting your kids watch a movie you bought.

You are showing it in an event, which you have not been licensed to do. I am not saying it's right, I am saying that is how the licence is written.

i think it is only an event if they are showing it on a really really big screen, or multiple screens ( more than 4)

from copyright law:

§ 110 · Limitations on exclusive rights:
Exemption of certain performances and displays
Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, the following are not infringements
of copyright:

....
(5)(A) except as provided in subparagraph (B), communication of a transmission
embodying a performance or display of a work by the public reception
of the transmission on a single receiving apparatus of a kind commonly used
in private homes, unless—
(i) a direct charge is made to see or hear the transmission; or
(ii) the transmission thus received is further transmitted to the public;

honestly, i think it really depends how many tvs and/or and how big the tv they are watching it on is. anyway. we have lawyers here....they can tell me if i am reading that incorrectly.

if OP works in a big office with lots of people viewing and customers viewing, then yeah, ok, it might be infringment. but if a small office is around a single not super large big screen tv, i dont think so.

lol at our potluck being an event ,though I guess legally a bunch of cube monkeys stuffing their faces with delicious food could be considered one.

Some people watch the entertainment in the conference room, some talk, others hibernate in their cubes so there may be about 15 out of 25 people watching whatever is on the screen at one time.

Ended up showing the Modern Family and Goldbergs Christmas episodes off ABC website. It wasn't one of the better episodes of MF. Someone suggested Goldbergs, it was okay but I'm not a huge fan of it.

Need to find something else for tomorrow.

Speaking of retarded copyright laws, did you know it's illegal to watch the superbowl on a TV that's larger than 55"?

The stupidity behind modern copyright makes my head hurt.

That said, I would do it anyway, because fuck copyright. I highly doubt anyone is going to report anything to the police. Nobody is being harmed.
