I thought setting up a small home network is easy as plus and play until I changed my first router (NetGear)...I went and got myself another Netgear WGR614 V5...I can't get it to work. I did exactly most of the steps the instruction books show but can't get the router to work. Yet, I thought the Router was bad so got myself another Netgear (WGT624 v3) and this one was brand new. I still cant get it to work...Not done yet....Last week I got another router Airlink 101 with Mimo Technology and here I am asking for help ( I know I should've done this earlier).
The problem start out like this: I'm using cheapo Verizon DSL. Once I connected the computer to the router then to the DSL modem everything is normal. Activities from the connection between computer and router are fine. Wireless signal broadcasts from the router is great....But I can't connect to the Net, neither from wired or wireless. This problem happended when I tried to use the other routers too....Probably my setting. I've tried to set default to all my routers.....but they don't have any effect. Could someone give me an idea where I should start from there?(to prevent me from buying another router and end up with broken bank account and couple hundred of routers in my room). Any input would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

I'm not familiar with Verizon DSL but don't you have to authenticate yourself with a username and password? Is this currently done with software installed on your machine? You need to put that info into the router.

Many DSL packages do require PPPoE setup on the computer end rather than built into their modems (fortuntely my newest sprint provided modem: zytel does it at the modem.)

1. Login to the router by typing in the gateway IP address into a web browser. Start >> Run >> CMD >> ipconfig.
2. Read the manual for the default username/password for intial login.
3. After entering that information, goto their main Setup/Connections page (it usually is the first page that actually loads).
4. Instead of using Automatic, or Dynamic IP, choose PPPoE. Then enter your verizon account name/password provided when the service was turned on (or give them a call)
5. Next restart your DSL modem
6. Reboot your router now
7. Ensure your network cards are setup to have the LAN settings autodetected instead of "dialing" or using any other connection type. In Internet Explorer >> Tools >> Internet Options >> Connections, delete any random dialing program there >> LAN Settings >> Check the box marked Automatically Detect Network Settings.

I believe amdskip quickly assesed the problem.

Verizon is a PPPoE connection. Depending on the modem you have - usually a Westell 6100 - the modem needs to be bridged. Then you can set the PPPoE information in the router. PPPoE is the user name and password set on the account to authenticate the connection. If you don't know how to bridge the modem you can get directions from dslreports or just call Verizon and they will walk you through it.
