My boss wants to bring in some of our basic color printing in-house to 1) save on costs and 2) so we can make custom pamphlets for folks. The minimum requirement is that it needs to print on 11x17 paper. Durability is a plus (as it will be used quite a bit), as is low cost (for the printer and ink).

Any body have any ideas? I'm personally an epson fan, but will take any and all suggestions.

Thanks!

Are you still in the discussion stage? Couple of generations ago we used the HP model to do a 2 sheet both sides "brochure" and becuz we wanted the full-bleed, we printed to 11x17 and then had it cut down...now, nothing against the printer...it did a wonderful job of what it's suppose to do...but...

In 25 words of less: reconsider the inkjet.

Now, we did do a *lot* of blue and green color (resort at Playa) and had very high percentage of coverage on each page so the 1st issue is the amount of ink not only in terms of cost of ink but the physical amount of ink on the paper doing both sides...a heavier paper was needed so it wouldn't bleed thru to bad...which in turn for our purposes, wasn't the best idea - as the wife put it, I'm a woman, I want something that folds/bends quick and easy so I can stick it in my purse and look at it later...

The other issue would be speed...it takes a while...be careful, you may end up babysitting the printer...it's a bummer to spend the time and ink to print off 20 of one side and have one or more of them skew on you or run out of one color just after you walk out the door to dinner and you come back with 20 ruined sheets...

Then you have to have them cut and depending on your layout, if it's really tight and the person at the copy shop doesn't understand just how much trouble it was to get to that point and they cut it badly...it's trashed...

then you get to fold and staple which isn't difficult but has to be done or you can pay the copy shop to do it...

paper can be an issue..depends on what you want to do...we did some glossy calendars, double sided (another story) but on the brochure, used a good color laser paper by hammermill...I could go on and on...

we ended up getting an HP4500 color laser - which presents it's own set of problems (it's a love hate thing) and rethinking our layout to include at least a quarter inch white border (altho we did do a *bunch* of 4x5ish borderless flyer/coupon things that were kinda cool)...

want more?

I like the Canon S9000 but patrickc is right, if you're going to do a lot of printing, reconsider an inkjet. Is outsourced printing really so costly? Maybe a color laser? I like the Lexmark C910 Color but it's pricey but so are all wide carriage color lasers. Unless you buy from ebay like I did!
