power metal is nothing like pantera or an orchestra

sigh... i was pointing out that operatic vocals overtop metal (i.e. power metal) is as incongruous as metal vocals (growling, screaming, etc) overtop orchestral music. pantera was just popular metal band that i was using for an example rather than some obscure band that no one would recognize.

that said, power metal is:

Dragonforce
Blind Guardian
Iced Earth
Nevermore
Demons and Wizards
etc.

i prefer my metal to not sound like it was performed by a bunch of guys in tights who go home and play dungeons and dragons.

Check out Beautiful Creatures, particularly their first album. I recommend the songs New Orleans and Wasted.

Wow, I can't believe someone else listens to Beautiful Creatures. Can't remember when I got their first album. It was back when 1AM was on a sound track for some movie. They're more like L.A. Guns, Faster Pussycat IMO.

My current favorite band is Bullet For My Valentine, nice guitar work on some of the songs.

Also listening to Spineshank, Silent Civilian, Dry Kill Logic, Element Eighty and Sixpin.

P.S. That Dragonforce video is nuts, those guitar players are very good.

Opeth

Also check out At the Gates ... they pretty much started the whole "gothenberg style" of melodic metal. They are significantly more agressive then In Flames and the like, but they are very good.

For a lesser known, but good Melodic Metal band, check out Insomnium.

Porcupine Tree is indeed worth checking out, They are really prog rock at it's finest.

Then check out Ayreon too, prog rock opera type music that leaves you just wanting more

Want something a bit darker? Check out Novembers Doom

Want something a bit crazier? Check out Abigor, Isacaarum, Gorerotted, and Pigsty

There are thousands of metalish bands out there, and there are excellent bands in just about every possible subgenre. Experiment a bit, and enjoy

and again, i'll say you've never listened to power metal because it doesn't sound like anything you've mentioned, save for maybe a few bands. most of them don't sound like what you are describing. none of the bands you mentioned sounds naything liek what you are describing.

I guess a lot of people must be really getting into cheese these days cuz theyr'e on the main stage at ozzfest this year.

Some excerpts from a Dragonforce thread in a guitar forum that I frequent (none of the quotes are my own):

I like metal bands with actual riffs...Dragon force just have a bunch of chipmink speed lord of the dance melodies and bad journey-esque vocals

dragonforce is gay cheesy sh!t metal for nerdy f@ggots that are greasier than a chilli cheese dog. all of their songs sound the same, and they overuse speed like fvcking sh!t.

nintendo metal. I hate how they're starting to really abuse their "video game effects." You know, those harmonic+whammy bar things they do.

i'm not trying to excessively bash dragonforce (though that is fun). just pointing out that it's not just me that thinks that powel metal is a big cheese-fest.

i do kinda like Nevermore because they temper their vocals with some nasty guitars from Jeff Loomis.

Heathen, you can download a lot of their stuff right from their website. www.heathenmetal.com

wow, thats all about one band, dragonforce. so that means that all power metal bands are like that? i don't really care for dragonforce's singer's voice but don't generalize like that. it also looks like its from a bunch of ozzfest fans. yeah, great bands like slipknot, disturbed, and other crap like that. they're real music fans...

Why am I arguing about vocals with a death metal fan? like there's any room to argue anything?

Something else you might try doing, go to amazon, find one of the bands you know you like, and there is a section of "people who got this also got....." I found several artists by doing that.

Yeah, I'm a little late to the thread, but this was the first thing that came to mind.

Also Nevermore and Porcupine Tree.

My favorite part of most songs is the guitar solo and instrumental pieces.
I think that just about rules out all modern rock/metal. Seems like no one does solos anymore...and if they do they're not anywhere as skilled as those of the metal veterans like Metallica or Iron Maiden.

Wait, wait, wait. First of all, you consider Nevermore power metal? No way dude. Heavy/thrash metal all the way through. Saying their vocals make them power metal would mean that old school Metallica and Slayer are power metal. Also, have you listened to Iced Earth? Their latest singer fits your description to be sure, but Matt Barlow (the singer for Dark Saga through Alive in Athens) has one of the sickest, raspiest voices in metal. They can be classified as power metal but his vocals were definitely NOT lacking in punch and aggression. And metal is a very diverse and versatile genre. To say that growling is the only vocal style that fits the music doesn't make much sense. That's like saying that metal shouldn't have any acoustic sections or alternative instruments because anything more than a guitar, bass or drums isn't metal. I can understand that you may not like the high-pitched power metal vocals (few do) but they aren't any less metal simply because they're not intimidating and scary. 😛

did you borrow this argument from 1998 or something? incredible musicianship typifies much of today's metal. chops-wise, if that's what you're concerned with, hammet can't (and could never) touch 70% of the bands listed in this thread.
