Just signed up for a gym. Need to get some decent workout shoes. I have a big foot (size 14-15). What would you recommend and where should I buy them?

Probably mostly cardio (stationary bike, elliptical, and treadmill) to start with. Eventually some weight machines. Probably won't do free weights since I won't have anyone to spot me other than my wife.

find a local running shoe store..many of them will film/watch you walk/run and reccomend a shoe for you. then again, if you are just lifting weights, shoes may not matter as much as if you are running... go talk to a local shoe store and they will help you out... be prepared to spend~100 though.

Well, if you're going to be doing those things, running shoes would be appropriate.

Let me address your "weight machines" statement. The only exercise you need a spotter on at any time is bench press. That can be alleviated by using dumbbells. You have no excuse to use weight machines. They isolate muscles and therefore increase the probability of injury both in and out of the gym. The development is less functional that way as well. Free weights are beneficial due to the development and strengthening of smaller stabilizer muscles. These stabilizers help keep your joints in positions of least risk. You need them for real life. If you trained with weight machines, you wouldn't be doing yourself any favors.

Now if you're going to be lifting, you should try to use something with a flat sole. Many novice-intermediate weight trainers use something like Converse sneakers. That should be sufficient.
