hey fellas (big hey to Thermalrock I know your reading this and yes i'll look into a generic PSU lol),

I am looking for recommendations for a Powersupply. Actually two but just one recommendation would be fine for both computers since they will be virtually identical. The only PSU's I have experience with are a Powerman 300 watt which has been great (since 1997) and my friends generic power supply which exploded and ruined $1,400 worth of parts, 27 gigs of porn, 7,000 songs, 200 games, 1,000's of ROMs, etc. It was terrible.

So i'm going quality on the PSU. I'd like to keep it around 50-100 dollars or so... The less the better but if I need more towards 100 to get power or quality my build would call for, i'll do it.

Recommendations based on the following build, please.

  • -Mid-tower case (Tsunami for me most likely, 2-3 fans i'd say)
    -Abit AV8 motherboard
    -AMD FX-55 w/retail HS/F
-1 gig DDR400 3200 Corsair XMS Pro or OCZ Plat
-ASUS V9999 Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra deluxe
-Seagate or Hitachi 250 gig SATA HD (might be maxtor 300gig for buddy)
    -Plextor DVD-RW/CD-RW
    -Samsung DVD/CD Rom
    -3.5" floppy

Future add-ons:

  • -may add a soundcard if I decide I don't like the onboard audio that well (I have a Monster MX300 right now, it has to be at least as good as it or i'll get a PCI soundcard)
    • -Extra hard drive (If we ever fill 250-300 gigs up)

I have only looked at OCZ powersupplies so far. Don't know if the 420w would be enough but i know the 500w is plenty but don't know the price. I know it might be out of my budget. So please if I can hear some recommendations that won't cause me any trouble with my other parts with interference or power quality and will give a good service life. Quality and good power! Post where I can get the recommended supply for a fair price also...

    Thank you guys,
    Seth

Rhin0, a word to the wise, if you're set on the Abit motherboard then DO NOT get an Antec power supply. The forums are littered with people reporting compatibility issues between Antec power supplies and Abit socket 939 motherboards.

Bump. Go for quality vs quantity. Get one that has more amps on the +12 volt rail.

^I agree with stevennoland^ Get a power supply with at least 24A on the 12 volt rail.

I've got a ocz powerstream 420 watt, it is plenty powerful to handle any system out there...it was 30 amps on the 12v rail and its adjustable, and reviews say its the best overclocking psu out there. If you really dont feel 420 watts is enough (which it is) you ould ge the 470 watt (soon to be discontinued) or the 520 watt all of which are great quality psus and highly reccomended.

Tagan, Seasonic, OCZ, Zalman, PCP&C are the tops in my opinion. Anything with 20A+ would be plenty.
