ok I have been using a Sony Cybershot DSC-S85 4.1MP camera for 5 or more years. I have loved it for the quality photos but also its ability to switch to manual and allow me to adjust a lot of settings for various shots. I need to replace it now and need some recommendations. I am looking to spend about $400 or so. I know this takes out even the lowend DSLR camera but I want to get as much functionality as I can get.

I do really like these:

Sony Cybershot DSC-H50
Sony Cybershot DSC-H10
Nikon Coolpix P80

Oh, and since you upped your budget to $400 look to the Nikon D40, D40x, and Canon Digital Rebel XTi/XS. They should be around $400 and any of these entry level DSLRs will completely destroy any point and shoot (like the ones you've listed) in terms of image quality. The ability to use many lenses also adds to their versatility, allowing them to fit any shooting situation with just a lens change.

Read this.

And this.

If you are interested in a DSLR, on Ebay you can get a new Pentax K2000 (K-m) with a kit lens (considered very good for what it is) and external flash (does not tilt/swivel) for less than $500/shipped. The downside, of course, is that with any DSLR you will need to shell out more $$ to get lenses that give you the zoom range that the "superzoom" cameras do.

Panny with HD video

This camera may have me venture away from Canon for the first time in 10 years...
