Just bought a cheap laptop(Compaq 4131T: P133,48mb ram) and I need a PCMCIA NIC to connect to my SMC router. Any suggestions?

A cheap 16 bit 10Mb one will do. Anything more than that is waste of money or you are looking at upgrade your laptop in the near future. (i.e. do not spend over $20).

No, I want to use this computer for very simple task(word processing, web browsing). My only concern was cpu utilization seeing that I don't have alot to spare. This is my first laptop so I am unfamiliar with the particulars involved.

I got a nice new 3Com 3C589 (if I recall correctly) PCMCIA 10Mb NIC for $11 off fleabay. They still sell retail for over $100!

I agree with the sugestion of a 3c589. You can pick up a 3C589D from Axiontech with a dongle cable for $17. I have ordered quite a few things from them and I'm always happy. Plus, they don't gauge you for shipping.
As Always,

So, there wouldn't be ant kind of performance hit, cpu-wise, going to one the cheaper PCMCIA NICs?

Not really. Another concern might be the power (battery) consumption, but again, very trivial too, especially if there is ethernet jack, there ought to be some power outlet, too.

3COM 3C589 PCMICA CARD

15 bucks, new in the box. But you can probably find it just about anywhere for that same price , but compUSA still wants 89.99 for the thing..and they wonder why they are experiencing a sales slump..
