affordable meaning, not more than $100/speaker :) And if we can do less that would be nice . . .
poor grad student here living off a government stipend . . .

these would be front speakers for a 5.1 surround setup.

A reccomendation on a good center speaker and powered sub would be nice too. around $150 or less each :) thanks for your help audiophiles!

Good and that cheap do not mix in the same sentence.

I would say Paradigms.

I would second the Paradigms :). Just a little FYI, if you drive to canada you can get them considerably cheaper. :)

Paradigms are good.......
If you want small, the Klipsch quintet's are super small (like the Promedia's sized....)......but wouldn't be very good for HT.
go out and listen to some in the store.

What do you mean by 4ohm and 8 ohm speakers?

A traditional 2 speaker system runs at 8 ohms. If you add speakers to make it 4 the resistance drops by half and you run at 4 ohms. This doesn't affect the speakers so much as the amp which can then put out more power.

In a surround system, there is separate amplification of each channel, so I don't think the resistance drops. Therefore, (if I am right) you'd be running at 8 ohms.

Anyway you wanted a recommendation.
