Doing a persuasive speech on ebay for a business class, 20 min minimum. Any ideas? Ease of use, extra pocket change, potential to start your own business if you find a niche.

Cons...fraud, learing curve, cost, dealing with idiots, etc....

Oh, and it's due tomorrow....

Reasons why people might want to sell on ebay.. to get rid of junk in your house you might otherwise throw out & make money on it as a plus. Low start-up cost, free mailing material from post office. Make more money from ebay buyers in a bidding frenzy than selling @ garage sale or classified ad. Easy to do part-time, even at odd hours of the night. Gives you something to talk about with other people, surprising how many folks like to talk about ebay. If you use paypal and have buyers put money in there then creates a little slush fund you from which can do some fun shopping :) Entertaining to start an auction at a low price and watch it take off.

Reasons why people might not want to sell on ebay... deal with dolts, dirtbags/NPBs, incompetent fools/slow-paying bidders, scam artists etc. on a fairly regular basis. Having to always pack up and ship items you've sold, not fun especially for the larger items. Dealing with the unhappy customer. Somewhat time-consuming, may not be good for someone with an extremely busy schedule.

On one level I think eBay is lousy - there appear to be a lot of people who get addicted. If you can resist that, then it might be OK. The incredible fact is that eBay is one of the very few dot com companies that really survived the bust. They're doing great - check out their recent financial results. I heard them last week and it was astounding. They have had competition right along but as the dust has settled, eBay seems to have emerged as the undisputed leader of online auctioneering. I've personally never sold anything on eBay but have bought maybe a dozen things, maybe more. I don't think of it all the time, but sometimes it's a logical thing to try both to find bargains or find hard to find things. I think a lot of what sells on eBay is overpriced, though. Also, people get cutrate stuff sometimes and unload it at eBay for more than it's worth. I've seen that. I've done pretty well, I think.

One of the best reasons to sell on eBay (and someone mentioned this) is to get rid of stuff you don't need. Pays more than putting it on the sidewalk.

Because it's popular and you get the biggest audience that way. I thought it was obvious ?

Of course, the cool thing about eBay is that you can practically find ANYTHING on it. I can't think of anywhere else on the Internet where you can buy beef jerky, trackpoint caps for a Thinkpad, and a crankshaft for a '69 Mustang all in the same place :)

Nice post! This is exactly what I was trying to think of but it just wasn't coming out of my brain. I've just been trying to hurry through this thing and I was forgetting all that basic stuff that makes a big difference.
