Hi all - I am in rather dire need of a fix for my sk-6+. Yeah yeah - i know it is not that great of a heatsink :p I have been using it for a little while, and my labmates are getting really annoyed with the loud 60x60x25 delta fan I have attatched to it. What are my options (short of replacing the heatsink)? I got that delta fan because of the great airflow, and while I wanted to get a 60mm-80mm adaptor, I saw that I wouldn't be able to attatch it to that heatsink (because it uses those clips instead of screws). Is there a silent fan that would be almost as good for cooling. I am overclocking my 2100+ about 300-400 mhz, if that helps any.

Thanks in advance

The only way you're going to get comparable performance is by changing the heatsink to one that supports 80mm fans which provide more airflow at lower RPM. Try the SK-7 and a low RPM 30CFM fan.

I thought about that - but my lab boss is going to have my head if i tell him i need to buy a whole new heatsink and fan. Is there any way to mod the sk-6+ to take a 80mm fan?

An 80mm fan will fit an sk6+. You may have to slightly bend one clip, but they will fit and no 'mod' needed. The ys tech is a very good one for that. ;)

You might also be able to put the 80mm fan on in a 45°-rotated "diamond" orientation and have the clips ride across the points of the diamond, if you're careful.

In the bigger picture, I wouldn't worry about the performance impact too much. The SK-6+ is a very good heatsink and should go head-to-head with any other 60mm-equipped heatsink available. You could probably just run your Delta at 7 volts and still be at or above the cooling level of a stock AMD heatsink/fan unit, and 7 volts will definitely take a bite out of the noise.

Alternately, get an SK-7 with your own $20 and don't tell. ;)

Ok...last little question about this. I like the idea about rotating a 80mm fan, but damn will I hear it if i can't get that sucker to stay in :p That being said, I was looking around and saw someone was selling the sk-6+ with an aluminum fan that had pretty good CFM and <30 dB.

Is that worth getting? And is something around 30db an acceptable sound level?

If that doesn't pan out, I may opt for the 80mm fan

Thanks for all the help - you guys are really saving my hide!

30db is a lot better than the delta you have now ;)... you could also try this and use one of those 70mm TMD fans.

Here's a brief article describing what mechBgon suggested with rotating the fan 45 degrees. Also, the SK6 with a quiet 80mm fan should be adequate. I have the same heatsink with a 7 volted 80 mm fan (the fan puts out 30 CFM at 12 V). It can keep my 1700+ at 2.2 GHz at 1.78 Vcore below 60 C under load. The 60 C is read by the diode in the cpu. The Panaflo L1A model is a good 80 mm quiet fan.
