Wait a minute, what about configuring the router on each PC? I was reading through the manual and it shows some steps about releasing the DHCP bindings or something, entering an IP address into Internet Explorer, and going through an HTML config page on the router. Is that needed?

either go into the router's config page, usually 192.168.0.1 or assign each machine an IP address/subnet and put them all in the same workgroup. Bam, 98 networking all done.

For just file sharing temporarily, you can do that with just peer-to-peer network (NETBUEI, or whatever it is called). You don't have to bother with TCP/IP just yet. After you get some, I mean broadband then mess with the IP.

as long as it's not ATT&T. they just updated their TOS to include:

(x) provide the ability to connect multiple computers behind the cable modem to set up a LAN (Local Area Network) unless it is done with AT&T Broadband approved equipment.

oh well, that's what mac cloning is for..

You guys are making way too much out of this.

Plug the computers into the router. Set them to DHCP. Set the router up to serve DHCP. If for some reason this doesn't work, give them each an ip address in the same subnet. IE give them 192.168.1.xxx or something to that effect. Make sure they all have TCP/IP installed and make sure they call all ping each other.

This is not a difficult task. In fact, it's probably about the easiest thing you can do.

Make sure at least one of them has a Win98 CD, preferably all of them as you never know what flavor of Win98 they might have, or if their network drivers/stacks are installed.

Actually, it's closer to 120 miles... but still. I don't want to drive all that way and back if I can't do anything worthwhile! I'd rather come back in 2 weeks and do it all in one day, one stop.

I didn't say she had any interest in me! :) We had something going about 4 years ago in high school, but she ditched me for some jock. This is why she isn't getting the friendly 'friends' rate for this install. :)

With Cox, i believe you have to register eac PC with them. I believe they charge per PC.

But here it looks like they don't have a problem with it at all?

that's just for people that want additional ips. since you're using a router, you're only going to need 1 ip.

Ok. I'll ask again, guys :) : Is it worth me driving 2 hours up there just to set up a 3-node LAN without Internet access, and having to step her through the cable modem-to-router hookup in two weeks over the phone, or should I just call this thing off today, wait, and just do it all in one bang in two weeks?

exactly.... 4 pcs thru a router is EASY networking...

just make sure file & printer sharing is enabled, and that you set share permissions on the folders...

they can access the other pcs thru Network Neighborhood.

pie.

Yeah yeah yeah... :p Seriously guys, she's expecting me to be there in an hour and a half now. And I'm still here. And still haven't mowed the lawn.

Unless they have some super critical need for internal networking now just with the 2 weeks...Unless of course there is some umm uhh incentive for you to go up now. ;)

Ok. Yeah, I wish there was some 'incentive', but that is highly unlikely. She just got off work 8 minutes ago, so I'll call her and tell her I'll just have to come in 2 weeks after finding out about the COX TOS policy (I'll b.s. my way through it), and that I really wouldn't be able to do anything worthwhile for her money (total service is going to be over $200) until the Internet is hooked up first (they don't share files anyway).

Thanks for your help guys, especially for the technical stuff. I copied and saved that for reference later! Now I can go mow the lawn and get busy doing other things that need doing around here today. :)
