Need QUICK Answer to DSL filter question

I know it is ghetto - but I need to know if it will work.


Phone line ----> DSL Filter -------> three outlet adapter plugged into dsl filter - three different things plugged into the three outlet adapter (phone, satellite, alarm) - I'm trying to avoid having to buy three distinct dsl filters - yes I'm broke.

Should work.

When I got DSL, instead of putting a filter on each phone, I unplugged the "main" connection wire where the phone line entered the house. I put in a two-outlet splitter in that jack. One side ran straight to the router, and put a DSL filter in the other side and then I re-plugged the "main" wire into the DSL filter.

One filter for the whole house.

Yup - the DSL filter basically splits the DSL signal off from the phone signal.

Once you've filtered out the DSL signal, you can split your phone signal however you like (just like a normal phone signal).

However, if you want to use another phone outlet (connected to the main phone line before the filter) then you will need a filter on that outlet as well.

If you can't afford DSL filters, you probably can't afford DSL.

I install DSL for a living. That'll work just fine. Just as long as the signal is cut off at the source.

Alarm?????

If you hook it up like that, wouldn't you loose the alarms ability to seize the line???

I am by far no expert, but I thought that the alarm was supposed to be the very first thing in the phone system, so even if there was something wrong with the lines in the house, it could still get out.

Who's your provider?

The first time I signed up for DSL they sent 3 filters and then the big main one, the second time they sent 4 and the big main one. We only have 2 phone jacks in our apartment so we don't need them at all.

It depends on the alarm system. Some of the newer ones have a built in DSL filter so you can just call the alarm company and they'll turn it on. Others you have have get a special filter that plugs into the alarm box (they're expensive too...$25-$50).

I did the same thing, but when I was having trouble with our DSL, the technician who came to service it, replaced that filter with a proper unit for that purpose. I somehow managed to skate on the usual $40.00 cost.

But what I was thinking was...
if the phone and the alarm are run off a splitter on one jack, if the phone was off the hook, the alarm wouldn't be able to call out to the alarm company...???

Wouldn't it be like picking up a handset when some one else is on another one in the house?? hence no dial tone??

I only turn the alarm on when we leave. I turn off satellite and don't make calls then obviously.

It isn't a new fancy alarm.

It is cheaper than cable. I've got the dish 60 channel pack with local channels. Equipment was free.

I live in the sticks, and around here all the dsl filters are like 14.99 and I did not want to worry about ordering one online if this would work. I've got it hooked now and it seems to be fine.
