Want to upgrade my 17"viewsonic CRT. It is about 5 years old. I game mainly so I am looking for a decent gaming monitor. I want to stay $200-$250ish range.

are you looking for an LCD or CRT?
as far as CRT's go, id say samgung and nec make good stuff, if you can get a hold of a sony/dell trinitron, go for it
for lcd....hanns-g, samsung, and viewsonic are good
try to keep under 8ms

Before you spend $300 on a 20in LCD, it might be a good idea to make sure you can handle gaming at 1680x1050. What kind of system do you have?

I really dont have any desire to game at 1680x1050. maybe 1280x1024 at most. I have been gaming at 1024x768 for years and dont think I could hack the tiny pictures.

Right now I have a e6400, 1 gig of ddr2 800, and a 7950gt 256 (though I am going to step up to the 8800gts 320 most likely).

Do you want to make the move to widescreen or stay with a 4:3 AR?

You're probably better off sticking with a 19" lcd monitor (non-widescreen), if you dont want that super-high resolution. I originally bought a 22" widescreen, and had all sorts of troubles getting games to run at that high a resolution in a proper aspect ratio. I switched it up for a 19" samsung 931c at 1280x1024, and i couldn't be happier. 22" monitors are for people with geforce 8800 gtx's and better than 20/20 vision.

I have 2 20" widescreen dell ultrasharp monitors. I love them. I never have trouble with quality when gaming and each one is bright and has 0 dead pixels.

I wouldn't say you'd have to run at 1680x1050 but you will want to run a widescreen resolution. Most games have a lower res widescreen options.

I like having a wide monitor, seems more natural now that I've had it for a while.

I have the Samsung 204B, it is 20" 1600x1200. I like it, it is a big fast TN panel and is nice and bright. I prefer 4:3 because it is more compatible with games and is still relatively wide, compared to 5:4 19" LCD's.

if you watch movies at all then widescreen is nice, also lots of games now have widescreen modes (and widescreen is likely to become the standard (if it is int all ready)). You may also want to consider checking for hdcp on any widescreen you buy (so if you want to watch a blueray/hd-dvd in the future you wont have to worry about computability).
