Need propellerhead hardware guru in NYC

WELL funded startup needs a major technical guru who is a hardware god(dess). Straight dope: pay is decent for a startup, full bennies, great coworkers. Midtown location, well served by several train and bus lines.

I don't care if you're 18 and fresh out of high school or 65 with a PhD. Just be able to walk the walk, talk the talk, be willing to work like a fiend, and provide guidance to two junior level hardware assemblers. Must be able to troubleshoot hardware at the component level in your sleep. Beyond standard user operating systems, software isn't so important.

No relocation.

For a junior level person, who's got moxy and is a complete and utter propellerhead who can teach his/her little brother/sister how to build computers and troubleshoot them at the hardware level, the salary is fantastic.

For a mid level person, the salary is appropriate.

For a senior level person, it'd be a bit of a gamble, with a livable wage. We'll IPO within 2 years and have completed 3rd round financing with very large amounts of inbound. The CEO has a proven track record of building these things and selling them successfully. There are currently 29 people in the company. So, if you're a gambler, it might appeal.

Today is the last day to get resumes in, we'll be hiring next week.

Sounds like a solid opportunity for someone willing to forego the banalities of cubicle living and go with something a little more exciting with more promise.

I still have no idea if this is a "assemble PCs bysticking the processor and video card in the motherboard" kind of job, or a "design a processor" kind of job.

Average geek skills should allow anyone to find the relevant definition of propellerhead from, say, wiki The term propeller head (sometimes abbreviated PropHead) also refers to a person (usually an engineer of some type) who is employed to do a technically demanding job. It appears to derive from a "head in the clouds" type stereotyping of more technically aware people (compare with geek, nerd, absent-minded professor, etc.) or possibly from the propeller beanie. The term may be meant or taken as slightly pejorative but is usually meant with some respect.

In general, anyone with the requisite skills and experience has heard the term often. used by other people to describe him.

If you've put together a few hundred pc's, that doesn't make you a propellerhead - but if you've put together a few hundred pc's and said Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if (etc) and you ended up with a working pc-controlled diaper changing device (etc), then you might be a p-head. Or if you built a working I-pod completely out of tinkertoys. Or if you've ever actually tested whether tinfoil hats block intergalactic rays. Get the idea?

It's more about taking things a few steps further, or trying things differently, or pushing past the limit just to see what happens. In general, in a tech biz sense, it's the kind of person who can fix or rig or work around whatever happens, and has been doing this their whole life.

She emailed me back after I sent in my resume on 07/30/2006 @12:35 PM, said the position was already filled.

But- maybe she didn't like my email. 😀
 
Sounds like a low-end job to me. The ad makes it sound like technical stuff, but then it hints at building PCs. Most children nowadays can do that. The ad is way too vague.

It may be an excellent opportunity for someone fresh out of school, but do you really think that 65 year old Phd is going to want to do basic computer hardware work? I'd hope that in 40 years out of college, he'd find a job that needs a Phd.
