Need proof that diet without exercise will not result in lean, fit body...

I have a friend that just will not listen to me when I tell her that dieting alone will either never or take much longer to result in a lean, fit body. She actually told me that she thinks exercising is a waste of time 😕

I've told her up and down that she needs to exercise to get the slim body she wants but I just cannot seem to convince her... Its not that she doesn't want to exercise she just doesn't see the benefit... so that makes it harder for her to get started.

It doesn't help that she was watching that "total loser" show and it took one of them 18 months to lose 40lbs... First thing I asked about that person was if they were weight training at the same time which they were... then I had to explain that building muscle (especially in a person that has never weight trained before) will pack on pounds of muscle really quick and negate the fat lost but will result in a lean body...

So, please if you have articles from trustworthy resources that state exercise is the only way to get a lean body, post em up!!

Um, that is easy. Ask any of the fat people if they have ever dieted, when they reply "yes" ask them why they are still fat...take her along with you. She will see the error of her ways... 😉

My dad went on the susan summers diet, the weight literally dropped off. He was SKINNY, like when he was still in the Army. It worked like magic.

Unfortunately, one day he just quit, started eating regular again. Now he's about 50% bigger than his pre-diet shape. Sad, really sad. He refuses to weigh himself and refuses to do any serious exercising.

if you eat less calories than your resting metabolic rate, you'll lose weight no matter what. doing exercise speeds up the process, and helps you look better once you're thin.

No exercise? You say skinny but did you see him without a shirt on? I bet he still had pesky fat in places like his belly and love handles...

Right but if you don't exercise and only diet it's my understanding that your body actually starts holding on to fat because it thinks its going to need it to survive...

What kind of diet is that? You sit around fapping to pictures of Susanne Sommers to lose the weight. :Q :Q

This is a little vague because even laboring or walking casually is technically exercising. However, if you mean like vigorous exercise, such as visiting the gym, then no you're mistaken; that is not the only means to stay lean. Staying fit, probably....

Eating in moderation will result in losing weight and maintaining the new weight. The problem is that many people who diet do it as a project--instead of incorporating it into their daily lives. Therefore, they see it as, and it feels like, work. (Yeah, it does require effort, but it isn't just work.) The moment they end their projects, they lose the benefits they gained. Your friend is wrong about exercise being a waste of time, but she is right that you don't have to exercise in order to obtain a lean look. Remember, eat in moderation.

without exercise alll you will do is lose weight you will not gain muscle.

ie. <insert picture of malnourished or starving person here>

Technically diet alone can get you skinny as a rail, but in practical terms it almost never works as a long term solution. It's not all that hard to lose a lot of weight, however the vast majority of people who successfully keep it off for more than 1-2 years do so with the help of some type of regular exercise program. Can't remember what group does this, but there's an ongoing survey that tracks the behaviors of several hundred people who've successfully kept a large amount of weight off.

Obsessively watching what you eat every day of your life sucks, hence most people that try that method alone eventually fail. Oh yeah, if you're a really determined dieter, leaving the exercise aspect out of a weight loss program also sets you up nicely for the yo-yo cycle...

real skinny people can have big bellies too, like ethiopians (or is that from some kind of disease)

tell her she'll just be another smaller sized size 40
