im trying to delete a movie that i have but it keeps saying that it is being used by another person or program. ive restarted a couple times and it still is doing that.

im trying to remember the program that tells you which program is using a certain file. i tried searching the forums and couldnt find the thread on this. can anyone tell me what program does this or will delete it? thnx

Damn...I was hoping for win98 😉.

Try this:

Click on start, run and type msconfig

Go to the tab with your autoexec.bat file and put the following line in FIRST:

del c:\directory\directory\file.mpg

Replace c:\...with the path to your file.

I haven't played with XP too much so I don't remember, but I think there's a check there or something on one of those tabs to tell XP to process the autoexec.bat file.

Hopefully, when you reboot, it will delete the file before whatever app is trying to access it can access it.

Actuall there is an easier way....

Close all the windows that are showing the file(explorer windows)

Click Start, Run, in the run window click browse. Browse to the file that you need to delete and just select it and press delete.

There is an issue with some movie files and explorer where it is trying to preview the movie so it won't let you delete it.

Well, mine woulda worked too 😛 😉

I just started using XP about a month ago and admittedly don't know a ton about it yet.

Thanks for that tip though Codewiz.
