Just was digging around a junk drawer of mine and came across an old laptop that I want to upgrade and get it going as a linux box. Opened it up and it had a:

Processor: Intel P4 M SL6FG 1.70 Ghz
Mobo: F5761-69002 (HP ZE4100)

And I was wondering what the fastest processor I could drop in there as a replacement? Anyone have any ideas?

I have an HP, P4 mobile based laptop with a 2.61ghz processor. I looked into this, and the 2.61ghz is pretty much cream of the crop. I believe it is a socket 478 cpu, I would verify with CPU-Z. Also, being socket 478, any of the cooler running desktop P4's (yeah, I know, "cooler running" and "P4" don't belong in the same sentence) SHOULD work, but don't quote me on that...

Interesting.. So would it be worth my time to investigate a desktop p4 for this mobo?

That's not a Pentium 4, that's a Pentium M. It uses a different socket (Socket 479, IIRC), and has a different pinout. You should be able to use any Pentium M in it. Newegg sells them, but none with the slower 400 Mhz FSB, like your system requires.

You've got a Mobile Pentium 4-M.

Here's the link at the Intel Spec Finder:

http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL6FG

It's a 478-pin Northwood core with a 400 FSB. Don't confuse it with the later 479-pin Pentium M.

The fastest Mobile Pentium 4-M was 2.6, but the 2.5 and 2.6 units are hard to find and expensive. Also, some laptops, like my Sony, don't recognize the 2.5 and 2.6, because they were pretty late production and weren't available very long.

Look on eBay for a 2.4--they're reasonably priced. Check the Spec Finder to make sure it's the correct chip. You don't want a desktop chip or a 533 FSB chip, and some of the sellers are clueless in their descriptions. :)

I upgraded my 1.6 to a 2.4 about 18 months ago, and it has made a huge difference in usability.

Hah, that's the same link that I provided. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to read it, or I would have seen the pin count in the upper right hand corner. Good catch, man.
