I usually just click the little "X" in the top right corner of the window and that usually takes care of it :p

I use it too, sadly just cannot surf the web without it these days anymore.

This Topic comes up alot, probably should be a permanent thread somewhere for this. You have to praise this Website for not adding Pop ups and contributing to the dilution of the Internet experience.

You could always use mozilla which is better than internet exploiter in the first place and has built in popup blocking.

Go for Proxomitron. Its the best I've seen. Blocks all types of pop-ups, easily tweaked and based on XML.

Also blocks banner ads, flashing ads, flash and all other types of annoyances. I've heard that Ad-aware is licensing code from Proxomitron developers.

yeah yeah.. while i love browsers like mozilla and opera, sadly, some stuff still just does not work the same as it does in IE.

i have all browers on my machine because some are good for certain things, and some are not.

the man needs a pop-up killer, not a new browser.

Internet Explorer was not listed as a requirement.

Personally, for a stand alone program I haven't found one better than Popup Ad Filter. Works great.

Actually he was looking for a replacement for xFS PopUpKiller, which only supports IE, so IE was sort of listed as a requirement ;)

Since I have Zone Alarm Pro running anyhow as a software firewall ... I also use it to block pops. Works ALMOST perfectly, there is one kind of popup I get, but it's not a typical popup, it's one of those java based things that looks like a small square window that appears on the left side of the screen and slides to the middle .. you know what I'm talking about, don't ya? ;)

I use addmuncher, it's diferent as it simply blocks popups by bloscking the scripts that generate the popups.

But I am trying to modify the javascript handling of IE to remove the capability of popups but still have some javascript usage that is needed on good sites like this one.

Anybody know how to remove or change the behavior of comands like window.open or onUnload in IE. Customizing these would put an instant stop to all popups but allow all wanted windows to load normaly.

Thanks

I use pow (someone else does too), it works pretty much as you've described. It closes windows based on their title. When you get a popup, add it to the list. It does not distinguish between normal windows and popups though. This means if you open IE up with about:blank as home, and have that on the list, pow will close the window before you can go anywhere. You can just as easily remove from the list.
