My Father-in-law seems to be set on AMD. He wants low cost good performance, and decent oc ability.

I think the best deal on cpu right now is the Phenom x4 9750 $90

So I need to find the best mobo for the money with decent oc ability. I would say budget is sub $100

I was thinking Biostar, gigabye or Asus for brands. I havent run an amd system since Opteron165, so I dont really know whats available or good.

Please let me know what your thoughts and recommendations are. Greatly appreciated. Thanks

DFI will get you some decent OC results. The 9750 isn't exactly the chip I'd buy though as you will find that it's headroom is probably 3.0ghz and it still won't compete with a PII at 2.8ghz. I'd spend 40 bucks more and get a 720BE or 80 bucks more and get a 940BE. You can also get a ECS 790GX board for about 120 and it will do you just right. That is what me and my buddy run... well I have the 940 and he the 720.

I agree that 9750 isn't the best option. It doesn't overclock well, and it runs hot. Additionally it is not recommended to overclock 9750 on a budget board, as reported by Gary. It's been a while since that article was published, but I'd still steer away from original Phenom + 780G. If you must have the 9750, you should pick a mid-to-high range board that can handle it. (790GX or 790X/790FX)

A very rough comparison would be like this:

790FX = X38/X48
790X = P35/P45
790GX = P45 + Radeon 3300
780G = G35/G45

I'd suggest you check out the recent Guides.

Thanks; I will look into this. No wonder they are selling them fairly cheap. Also for 40-80 more he might as well look into Intel IMO.

Some pretty good deals can be found

Yeah, the 9750 is ehhhhhhhh...

The best CPU deals @ Newegg right now are the PhII X3 710 @ $120/shipped, and the X4 920 @ $169/shipped. Intel doesn't have anything that's as good of a value ATM - at least when comparing Newegg's prices.

You can get a good 790 board for $100 or less. I'm a fan of the Biostar T-series, as they are well-priced, good overclocking features, and use solid caps.

If you prefer Intel, if you can find the Q8300 for the same price as the X4 920, it's almost as good. If you really need a sub-$100 CPU, I'd rather the Intel E7200 over the Phenom 9750, unless there is some application that really benefits from 4 cores.

ZipZoomfly has the PhII X4 940 for $169/shipped, which is a phenomenal deal (pun intended!).
