Need performance advice

I'm a very technically adept person, but for the life of me I cannot decide between:

Sempron 3100+ combo at Outpost.com for $99.99

or

Pentium D 805 + a motherboard from NewEgg for ~$200

It looks like the Sempron would be good for 2.6GHz and the PD 3.6ish.

Any comments from the peanut galley? I'm currently thinking that the Sempron is the way to go, since the performance will be competitive, and much cooler and quieter.

I do want a 805 to play with though...

Sempron. It's her computer, play with her instead of her processor

I'm still pissed that mobos don't come with integrated 1394 anymore. I'm going to have to buy a g-d PCI card so that we can sync up her iPod.

Reason for this whole exercise is her CD changer is going out, and her dash isn't big enough for an Empeg (google it), so I'm getting her an Alpine CDA-9857, the iPod cable, and a (broken screen) iPod to act as the HD for it. Of course, she'll need a computer to sync the music from, and her laptop won't cut it for that. It's a P3 700, USB1, and the only PCMCIA slot is being taken up by a 10/100 card for her RoadRunner. So it's time for a desktop.

I'll probably pull the trigger on the Sempron, even though I have a deep-seated distrust of ECS. I know the quality is a lot better than it was 7-10 years ago, but that impression has stuck with me.

why wouldnt a P3-700 cut it? would work perfectly fine.

Edit: yet again another shinning example of buying a Corvette to go to the grocery store. People over-buy on PCs way too freakin much.

You have got to be kidding me? Did you read the whole post?

It's a laptop. It has one PCMCIA slot. It is USB 1.0, since it's a P3 700. My iPod is Firewire (1394). The PCMCIA slot is being occupied by a 10/100 card so she can get on RoadRunner.

Even if I did order the USB->iPod cable, it'd still be a dog-ass slow connection since it's USB 1.0!!!.

If you and bamacre had read my whole post, you wouldn't have looked like such idiots.

And, I can't believe you two called a Sempron 3100+ combo a Corvette. Gimme a break, it's $100! It would be uneconomical to buy anything less.

OMGZ! I ask about a $100 processor motherboard combination, you guys SCOLD ME because it's two powerful, and instead I'm supposed to spend $700 on a POS Dell?

Seriously?

Do you guys think I'm some kind of n00b or something? Think I can't build a rig? I've got (most) of the spare parts around the house to build this up, I was just wondering how much faster the 805 was.

I never expected to get a lesson from Larry and Curly.

Whoa. The pricing on that system I linked to was $364 at the time I linked it. Very interesting that it changed. Nevertheless, yes, a Dell refurb is what you aught to consider.

Search for Dell Outlet in Hot Deals.

I sell systems for a living, I wouldn't recommend it if I didn't think it would be something you aught to consider.

Dell refurb is a sound idea, however if you do buy components the Sempron will be more than enough. Although it would be nice to have a P-D805 I don't really think its neccessary to spend the extra cash.

I feel the same way. Take the 3100+ and knock it down to about the value of a good 2500+ just because it is a semperon.
