Need Overclocking Help

Working with Win98, a PIII 650 (100mhz FSB), 128MB PC133 Ram, a VOODOO 3000 AGP, and an ABIT BE6-II.

I've got the FSB up to 120 (=787mhz), but when I step up to 121 (or more), Windows won't load properly -- it says a Windows Protection Error has occured and that I need to restart.

Has anyone encountered this before? It sounds like a software issue, not hardware. Is there some command I can throw into my Config.sys file to fix it? Any solutions/suggestions?

Thanks in Advance.

While a software problem can't be ruled out, it's more likely a hardware prob. I can't remember if the V3/3K is an eager OCer. Maybe 80 Mhz AGP bus is all it can handle. It's not at all unusual for a box to say "yep" to 112 Mhz FSB, and "no way" to 113 Mhz FSB, for example.

If your P3 650 is from the ca2 rather than the cb0 stepping, that's a roadblock. If you don't have lots better than Intel's "stock" HSF, that's a roadblock. If less than ~35 cfm is flowing through your case, you get the idea. Best of luck.

I usually get that error when I try crazy speeds like 976 MHz with my trusty ol' 533A. Ie. It's a hardware issue. V3 should be fine at 80+ MHz, although maybe not 89 depending on the card.

As I always say, try setting your RAM timings slower to see what happens.

Ram times slower as in CAS 4 instead of CAS 3?

I've got the Coppermine, so that's why I didn't think it was hardware... heat doesn't seem to be a problem according to the BIOS readings.

Everything I've read said that the V3 3K should be able to handle the 80s OK.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks again.

Forgot to mention that the VOODOO 3 3K has a fan on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around crashing at a mere 787mhz? I'm aiming closer to 900....
