Used to be Plextor was THE optical of choice. I keep hearing that's not the case anymore.
So, what is the high end DL burner these days? Samsung? Pioneer?
Jeez, I remember the days when ANYTHING Samsung or Lucky Goldstar was absolute crap.
Your thoughts and feedback please.

Samsung, Pioneer would be my two top choices. However, it really doesn't matter much IMO

I agree with PurdueRy. I switched from IDE opticals to SATA and recently bought 2 Samsung SH-S203Bs from Newegg. I'm quite happy with them, and they're fast, 20x...

If you're interested, here's the url: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827151153

Just FYI, I still burn at 8x, even with a faster drive...just a matter of insuring a reliable burn. I read somewhere that when you burn faster, you risk a coaster.

Plextor couldn't or didn't adjust to the new market and stuck by their philosophy of producing 'THE' best optical drive. Unfortunately the ratio of price and quality ruined their sales because of so many other cheap replacement.

Plextor was able to survive the days or MAD-DOG and Memorex drives, but not anymore.

I sure miss them though.

There are Plextor drives out there but the current models seem to be rebadged Pioneer drives. Don't know what you get extra to make them worth nearly twice the price. I think my 712A still works. I think the Asus drives are also rebadged Pioneer - those have always been a decent choice.
