Need opinions on heatsink

okay so i want some opinions on these three heatsinks and i am using an AMD Athlon X2 4200+, the heatsinks are as follow...
ASUS Silent Square
ASUS Star Ice
Thermaltake

honestly, i can tell you none of us have used the Asus coolers. Thermaltake, maybe. but even that's not too popular of a choice. most would go for Zalman 7700 and 9500 or Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro.

dont buy asus star ice, i had one and it was impossible to attach to the mb, the screw broke while trying to attach, and the fan is the loudest thing you'll ever hear from a computer

Please spend some time reading the stickied reviews at the top of this page.

For $50 you can get the near best available today. There are 5 or 6 HSFs that are at the
top of the pile for quiet cooling. What you linked are not amoung them.

Did your processor come with the stock cooler? if It is one with the 4 heat pipes, aftermarket coolers won't lower your temperatures more than a couple of degrees.

There's a good chance you'll be better off sticking with the stock cooler.

Yes sir! OP you best read the linked thread.

ianmills, I focused on the linked sinks and missed the chip.
I do like the idea of up-rating the fan to 80mm on the stock AMD heat pipe HS.

Yes..read the link. I drawn my own conclusion from the HSF Sticky. I'd stay away from the Big Typhoon (I had one). My next choices would be the Freezer 64 PRO (this is what I have and installation is tooless and only takes a few seconds-performance on par with Zalman CNPS9500) or the Zalman CNPS9500. The Zalman is truly a piece of art! I decided to go with the Arctic Cooling setup because I just built my first A64 system and the cost of both the CPU and GPU cooler was just a few bucks more than the CNPS9500.

I would stay away from the freezer 64 Pro many people getting conflicting results!!

I just ordered a Zalman 9500 to replace my stock heatsink. I got it for the same price as an XP-90 without a fan. I'll post the results next week, once I've got it all installed.

Get an SI-120. $44 @ jabtech. Lighter than zalman, practically the same cooling.

Edit : Easier to install too.

Ditto. I just got one of these, and after messing with a selection of other heatsinks, I'm finally happy.

If u dont like lights, then dont get the CNPS 9500. LED's are very good for computer's: no heat, very little operating voltage...etc etc. But, the 9500 is expensive. The SI-120 or Sycthe Ninja are very good for the price. Instead of a 92mm fan used on the 9500, the SI-120 and Sycthe use 120mm fans. More airflow, less noise.

aww, no ninja love? i always recommend the Scythe Ninja but also havent had a chance to check out the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 pro yet either.

The Scythe Ninja is not suitable for use with most 939 motherboards, especially if you intend to use a 120mm fan.
