These look pretty similar in spec...but there is $50 cost difference...

I have an S820 that has run out out of 2 inks..Photo cart...still have some cyan, magneta, yellow....it is 6 cart printer..text was ok..pic excellent

the printer is making a horrible noise..not sure if it is going to kick the bucket soon...

Should never allow thermal inkjet printer (most all except Epson - and Epsons clog if you even look at them funny) to run out of ink - can cause head to overheat and burn out the dry nozzles.
. The only significant difference between the 3k and 4k is that the 4k has two blacks - one pigmented for text and one dye-based for photo printing. The 3k is the equivalent of the i560 while the 4k is similar to the i860.
. I have the iP3000 and it works great. Photo printing on 4000 should be a bit better. See review of 4000 on http://www.steves-digicams.com and I've written a review on my 3000 at http://www.techimo.com/reviews/ . Too bad you weren't on the ball a few weeks ago - could hve picked up a 3000 for $60. plus tax at Staples... Might still be able to as I think Staples has 30 days of price protection. I have proof that they were selling them for $59.98 within 30 days of today. I could scan it and attach to email for you.
. They have some of the 6-ink Pixma photo series out now too if you need the last iota of photo quality.
..b.h.

The 4000 has two blacks. That'll give you more precise colors in dark areas of photos, and you obviously won't run out of black as quickly.

The S800 were 4-ink, 2400x1200. The IP4000 uses essentially the same tech, but with a special "photo black" and 4800x1200 resolution. So I'd say it'll be at least as good ...

OK..Maybe I goofed my S820 is 6ink printer..blacl, photo cyan/mag,cyan,yel, mag...pic look great...but as I said I am low on 2 carts and it is making a very funny noise..which started prior to low ink stuff...

however pics look great...I am not interested in spending more than $150 for a printer at this point..wonder whether the 6inks photo printer is key

The six-ink printers are better with light colors in photos, e.g. skies and skin tones, thanks to their light cyan and magenta inks.

Canon printers are pretty sturdy - and besides, the IP series use the same (color) ink as the S820 anyhow. So why not buy some ink and see how long your current one lasts? And then go for a higher model, like the IP5000, with new 1-picoliter droplets and 9600x2400 dpi ...

funny you should recommend that Peter..that was my plan...but these new Canon Printers sound great ..with awesome features...but my experince is that sometimes the new printers do not print as well as older models

Zepper, Do you think the deal at staples is still possible? If so, what can I do? The cheapest I have seen the 3000 is about $90 delivered. Are you still happy with it? I have a clogged C82 and don't want another Epson doorstop.
Thanks
