Lite-On makes very good cd burners and they are usually quite well priced...check newegg.com for some prices...

Yup.

I bought my Liteon 40x12x48 off Newegg back when it first came out and it has been working like a charm for months now.

For the price I don't see why you would want anything else.. sure, you could get a Plextor with a bigger buffer and such, but who really needs that? Mine burns everything and it was cheap. I say go Lite-On.

I too have the 40x12x48x Liteon burner and it's quite sweet. It burns fast and with the Smart burn tech it prevents alot of coasters so don't worry about the 2meg buffer as compared to a larger one. Do not go for the 48x burner from Liteon cause I have heard of problems with the drives and a higher failure rate, plus they aren't really much faster than a 40x burner.

Save some money, go Liteon!

Good Quality + Excellent Value = Lite ON
Very Good Quality + Average Value = Plextor

If you are looking for a LiteOn, I just got a 40x TDK for $40 after MIR at CUSA - the ad is good through this Sat (always check Hot Deals).

Another vote for Plextor if you want "the best"

I vote for Plextor too. 5 friends and I all use various models and have never had a problem over the years. I've sold a couple 40x12x40's and they are solid. Simply the best.

I have owned both LiteOn drives and Plextors, they are both great drives but I believe that the Plextor is of higher quality. Sure it may cost more but I would pay the extra for the Plextor.

I vote for Plextor... I'm actually using the 40X Plextor right now. The Lite On drives are faster and cheaper. Both are excellent drives.

I would agree with Plextor comments. I just bought and returned a TDK drive that created more coasters in one week than I have in the last 3 years. Don't know what its problem was, but the Plextor that replaced it is awesome. I've used 8x, 12x and 24x Plextors previously and had nothing but great results.

It seems that everyone is focusing on either Plextor or LiteOn. This is very interesting, because I remember hearing a rumour last year that Plextor's parent company, Shinano Kenshi of Japan, was also the primary manufacture for the Taiwan-based LiteOn Tech, Corp.

From what I read, I think Plextor has a 4 mb buffer and LiteOn has a 2 mb buffer. Also Plextor uses Zone-CLV technoligy, but some of the LiteOn models do not. (you can read about Zone-CLV here: http://www.cdrinfo.com/hardware/ricoh7200a/)

But I read recently somewhere that there is a new technoligy out there, P-CAV, that records faster/more frequently accessed data to the inside of the CD-Rom and slower/reference data near the outside. But the trade off was that Zone-CLV could nolonger be supported, because it now mapped the CD as rings not sectors. There was also a quality issue for audio CD's? Whether it is out yet, I do not know?

This stuff is really beyond my own technical expertise, but I thought it might help to share what little knowlege I have. Here is some reference links you might want to look at and a quote from the first link:

1) Roundup 1

2) Roundup 2

3) Roundup 3

-------------------------------------------------------
Quote:
-------------------------------------------------------
"LiteOn LTR-40125S is definitely the winner at this roundup. The drive is the faster in both reading/writing tests than both ASUS and Plextor drives are. LiteOn decided to give users the option to de-activate "Smart-Burn", which however is not recommended from our side, at least with 16x and even with 24x certified CDs. Users will be pleased from the ability to backup almost all protected CDs and will be disappointed from the lack of Mt. Rainier format, the increased noise and the fact that it cannot handle any protected AudioCD. The biggest advantage of the LiteOn drive towards the competition is assumed in one word: Price.

Plextor PX-W4012A has a few unique features (black tray, VariRec function) but also an increased price (up to $150+). Of course the European users have an additional year of warranty (2 years in total), which can affect their final decision. In addition Plextor has promised Mt. Rainier format support with future firmware upgrade, which none of both ASUS and LiteOn have done so far."

wow, i did not dream that i would get this many replies. thanx to everybody that took the time to reply to this post. i went to my local best buy and checked to see what they had in stock and found they had an open SONY 40X12X48 CD-RW for $69.99. could not pass it up as my old one is a 12x8x32 SONY CD-RW which has served me error free since i got it with not 1 coaster. so i bought it and have not had any trouble at all for 3 cd's now. once again thanx to all that replied

Teac makes great drives. I've burned over 3000 cds on mine. Still working flawlessly.

Two more reviews you should look at:

Eleven 20x/24x CD Burners : No surprises here the Plextor finished at the top of the list.

But, hold on!

In another article written this month, Plextor did not do as well as the LiteOn!!! Plextor only copies 2 out of four disks!

I still like to quality of the Plextor construction myself. Im looking at a Plextor 40x12x40 for myself. And I think I found a pretty good price too! $93.95 after the $20 rebate.

Anybody have any input as to which CD-RW drives read the worst CD's (scratched, dirty)?

I just bought a Polaroid BurnMax 24x10x40 for, get this
rolleye.gif
, $9.99 at Office Max. And it seems to be working great! I just copied the entire Worms II CD in 2.16 Min. It has NTI softwear which apprears to be based on Nero 5.0 but it has a funky interface. But once you get past, the kid like graphic look, it works great!!!

Who would of guessed? Best $10 I have spent in a while!

LG is great.

I've also heard good things about ASUS.

Both these brands are well priced too. I've heard of Lite-On drives dying alot so I try to stay away from those.
